True, the EU don't seem to usually like getting involved in internal politics. But if they did surely the Benn act requires any response to the PM's extension request to be put to parliament?
-
Hopefully the EU will agree to a delay only on condition of a second referendum. Surly they want this settled once and for all, extending for a GE which might make the situation harder to be resolved seems an odd thing to do.
-
I can't believe we're going to have a general election. We risk having a sh!t Brexit forced on us by our our outdated and inept FPTP voting system. Out of the EU under Boris Johnson or in it under Jeremy Corbyn - it's like a choice between syphilis and gonorrhoea.
-
Yep, then another hung Parliament and we are back to where we are now.
-
The same site has remain ahead in virtually every recent poll on Brexit.
-
Would be worth it just to force Boris and his ERG lot to block Brexit.
-
It is bonkers. The Tories waste three and a half years with three PM changes, cabinet reshuffles, a general election, perpetual can-kicking of a useless deal, closing down Parliament and pointless queen's speech - NOW it is so urgent they need to bulldoze it through the house in a few days.

There's a difference between promising something and not delivering it or changing your mind over time, than blatant lies. "There are no media here" whilst stood in front of press, TV cameras, photographers and his own media officer is my favourite, that's Iraqi Information Minister standard of lying. All to a man upset about his seriously ill daughter. The bus lie is another classic, if you have lie make sure it's big one. "It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying." — Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol. I, ch. X

Oh come on, Boris is up there with Trump with his scale of bullish!t.
-
Push this deal through and it won’t stop the uncertainty, we could still crash out at the end of 2020 without a deal. The Tories banging on about “just getting it done” is laughable, they are the ones who have wasted three years with pointless leadership changes, general election and futile can kicking of their first terrible deal.
-
I said he got what he deserved, not that I agreed with how he got it.
-
I dunno, Peterborough is one of the most pro Brexit constituencies and they voted Labour in June. I expect the two main parties will get a bit of a kicking and can’t see either getting close to a majority. If anything, with the Lib Dem’s, SNP and Brexit parties doing well Parliament will be even more of a mess. A second refurendum is the screaming obvious way forward. Get the deal through the house on the condition of a public vote and nothing will be holding it up.
-
I don't think they will extend unless it guarantees some sort of decision on Brexit. Chances are a GE will just result in a hung parliament which will solve nothing, if anything it could make the situation even more muddled if the main two parties do as bad as expected.
-
I think the best outcome is for the deal to get approved subject to an approval referendum. That takes no deal off the table, takes parliament and party politics out of the equation, and means this option has been chosen because it is the best way forward not just because there is a threat of a no deal.
-
It's amazing how many people still don't get this.
-
You just get Parliament to approve the deal on the condition of a legally binding confirmatory vote, then it wouldn't have to go through the house again.
-
Chances are that will just end up with another hung parliament and wont achieve a thing, needs to be a second vote - that has been obvious for a while.
-
I expect Boris will get a deal, it will be pretty much identical to May’s but he will announce it as the best deal ever knowing full well it won’t get through Parliament. Then he can carry on this ‘people v Parliament’ bullish!t through to the inevitable election. This whole circus is just all about saving the Tory party.
-
Got what he deserved.

Their targets are impossible and their fears exaggerated but that’s probably the best way to get their point across about the urgency needed. It’s a direct response to the bullish!t fed to us by the government about how they are serious about climate change. The fact that we are on here discussing it shows it is working, the more people that actually look into the science, discuss and think about the issue the better.
-
You sound confused, if you don’t believe the science why exactly do you want things to change?
-
If you look on their website you can see it is clearly about the environment.
-
I don't think gradual change is any where near enough, that is what we have now (new runway anyone?) - and I think the science backs that up. Extinction rebellion's targets are fanciful/impossible but they are bound to be, just to get the point across to fellas like oldnick who still don't understand the science.
-
I don't care what they are saying, I just think anything that puts the problem on the agenda is a good thing. Governments are not disputing the science but they just play lip service instead of actually doing what is required, all they care about is appearing to be doing something to appease the electorate. Problem is it works, at election time they just need to be photographed planting a tree and riding their bike, mumble something about green technology and the issue just goes away. That is why we are where we are.

If you are put off taking measures to protect the future of the planet because of a few protesters in London then there really is no help. We all know it's going to take decades to become carbon neutral, if it is possible at all, and the protesters know that. All they are doing is trying to move things along a bit quicker because at the moment our governments accept the science but seem incapable of taking the tough action necessary.
