Should we be offered a referendum on the EU?
aintforever replied to View From The Top's topic in The Lounge
That's just a complete cop out. When a Party gets elected promising to hold a referendum then doesn't it is clearly deceiving the country. There is no other way of dressing it up. -
So what you're saying is, Santa does exist as long as you believe he does? So what ever you believe is true - is true, because in your mind it exists.

Using the fact that people are not well enough informed to make a sensible decision as a reason not to have a referendum is nonsense. It's up to the government to make sure the information is out there. It's not the joining the EU that has annoyed me about this in particular, it's more the arrogant Labour government once again making a mockery of democracy. The country obviously was against the war - Labour go and butcher thousands of people anyway. The country is obviously, at best, devided over Europe - labour ignore that and launch straight into a European superstate regardless. Add this to the MP's expenses (now going to give themselves a pay rise against public opinion) and the money that are throwing at the banks and you realize why people feel so helpless, democracy seens so pointless and why people vote for the BNP out of frustration. -
Non believers would believe, if there was any evidence. If I saw a fat bloke in a red suit flying through the air in a sleigh pulled by flying Reindeers I would believe in Santa. I wouldn't believe it could be true just because it said so in some book and some people told me.

No, that's why I think Religion is now out-dated, advances in science mean most of us know that there isn't some god sat on a cloud judging us. It has performed a role though, and although many evils have been done in the name of religion I would bet that if it wasn't for it's moral guidance in the past there would have been a hell of alot more - humans can be pretty nasty animals.

Whilst I think he Bible is a load of made up fairytales and God obviously does not exist I do think religion has played an important role in our civilization. I've been reading alot of the People's War stories on the BBC and one thing that I noticed was how everyone was more religious back then. They also seemed to have a higher standard of morals than today, more respect for authority and others, better manners and just a more decent upstanding existence in general. Today we have allsorts or riches and comforts but the world we live in is materialistic, shallow and devoid of almost any decency and morals in comparison. It may be nothing to do with religion just the way the World has changed but I think Christianity played a big role in creating a decent world - especially in the days where "thou shall not kill" was a groundbreaking idea. Also to be fair, during the War millions of people were gassed to death in central Europe by a Christian country.

I don't think anyone said that. -
Why do people persist with this cease to exist crap, if pompey go bust they wont cease to exist just like Saint were never going to cease to exist. There will always be a football club in Portsmouth and Southampton regardless of whatever companies go bust - same applies to any other town. I would love portmouth to go bust and end up non-league though - that would be ideal.

You would expect a case like this to be pretty water-tight if it's going to court.

I was talking about the ones in Lord of the Rings.

I can't see much difference between believing in God and believing in Father Christmas, Tooth Fairies or Dwarves.

Of course we should, at the moment we are being bulldozed into a European super state and no one even knows if it's what the British people want. More Labour lies making a mockery of democracy. -
Only an idiot would think you could fly with one wing.

The BBC says Coppell has turned down Brighton, hopefully they will wont find anyone in time for next week.

Half Mile High Club?

Religion is for weak, insecure people who can't handle the fact that when they die they are just worm meat.

Screaming kids on planes should be drugged and stuffed into a soundproof shelf between the floor and the cargo hold.

Same here, the way we were spun into the war was a disgrace. I couldn't believe the British public were mug enough to give that bunch of liars another go. I'm particularly annoyed because I believed all the hype about WMDs, as it turned out Iraq was a million miles away from having any, the years of crippling sanctions meant they barely had a working army let alone WMDs.

The American system is ****ed up. I'm surprised that such a religous country are prepared to sit back and watch their neighbor die because they are less well off.

Redknapp must be getting twitchier now because you can be sure Storrie will squeel like a pig at the prospect of being banged up.
-
Wrong, Labour have been voted in since the start of the Iraq war so their policy of butchering thousands of innocents for more oil was well known to the electorate.
-
To be fair I doubt all Labour voters agree with warmongering in the Middle East. I generally vote Lib Dem because they are the only main party serious about the environment, most of their other policies I am dead against. Likewise I expect 90% of BNP voters are not racist but just voted for them because no other party are tough enough on immigration. In fact if that is your main concern then a vote for BNP gets your point across much better than a vote for any of the other parties. Just like if the Greens get shed loads of votes the main parties will shift their policies in that direction to get more votes.

So you think Heskey is the second best striker in England then too?
