I am reminded of how Spurs blew the Bale money on over-priced mediocrity. We sit here at Christmas, sat a perilous 3 points above the relegation zone, and our only player capable of scoring is out with a hamstring for the next number of weeks. The forthcoming transfer window is perhaps the most important ever in Saint's history.

The canker of complacency that was gnawing away, unseen, during Koeman's era, infected and rotted the first team under both Puel and Pellegrino. Yes, Puel had to go, and so now does Pellegrino. But there needs to be far-reaching change higher up, and a return to the electrifying club we had only a few seasons back. Southampton needs corporate operational leadership that will rejuvenate the moribund academy as well as the first team.

I don't buy this line that is frequently trotted out: "The board won't sack MoPe because they'd have to sack themselves". Boards have no conscience. They will seek to preserve their own positions and status and make the team manager the fall guy. Always did and always will.

The trouble is, it is not a case of a great squad, or even a very decent squad, but poorly managed. The squad has too much dross and too many “stepping stoners” who are disgruntled because they see their career pathway having turned up a cul-de-dac when they thought it led to Liverpool or Tottenham. A new manager is probably required but certainly major surgery to the squad. A full rebuild required.
