  1. So is the ticket office open on Sunday morning at St Marys? Or is it phone sales only until Monday morning?
  2. Mariners fan here, primarily because I was there in the middle of Ichiro-mania in 2001. Also follow the Cubs because of (a) Ferris Bueller's Day Off and (b) the general awesomeness of Wrigley Field and © I used to work with a Cards fan and it was good for banter. Oh and of course the Curse of Billy Goat. Saw a Mariners @ Mets double-header at Shea, brilliant day out (no rushing off with 2 outs in the inning to get a beer and hotdog . Packed with families because it was a Sunday, and there I was in a Mariners shirt in amongst the home fans. And then they worked out I was a limey as well Don't get to follow it as much as I used to, mainly because my teams are utterly crap at the moment and the season is usually done by the All-Star break.
  3. Likely to be a similar outcome to the Carnival Splendor fire last year. Problem is that electrical fires take out huge amounts of wiring and travel between compartments via the trunking so its very easy for redundant systems to be damaged. Whilst there is redundancy of engines they tend not to have two engine control rooms, so if that catches fire you're screwed. Think they're set for a couple of days with no aircon, hot food, toilets, or, more importantly, slots and beer. Going to take that long to tow them in to the Seychelles and then the problem comes with making repairs, not really equipped to do that out there. Carnival Splendor took 3-4 months to recommission in a state-of-the-art dockyard in San Diego.
  4. Love the old Soviet anthem (see Hunt for Red October). On the subject of films, the scene is Casablanca when the French outsing the Germans is the best use of a national anthem in any media, especially if you view it in the context of the time when France was still occupied.
  5. Slight error in that article, its Victoria Street, not Victoria Road. Unless they intend to ferry them across from Woolston in LSTs!
  6. Seems sensible, not much different to arrangements for some of the proper nawty clubs
  7. As a season ticket holder I find this very unfair - why should I be able to get a ticket for my old man (who goes to a couple of games a year at most) over someone who has been to every game but isn't a STH? Club know from the database who has been to the most games and they should sell tickets on that basis. Having said that, I will get one for the old man, and stick him in Block 1
  8. Having been through what Billy's going through I doubt very much that what some anonymous coward says on the internet makes any difference to the pain. His son died of a genetic condition which means that he and his wife have a 1 in 4 chance of having another child with the same defect. There is nothing worse in the world than the loss of a child, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
  9. Program about Victorian sport was on at 9pm on Friday, featured The Corinthians, CB Fry talking about our loss to Sheffield Utd in the 1901 Cup Final, and a little bit on Charles Miller and South American football in general. Available on iPlayer... CB is predictably posh...
  10. What a game. Gutted but massive respect to the Giants
  11. Woohoo, Pats @ Rams is back on, tkts on sale 2pm today
  12. So all you need to do is find who he banks with and it's beers all round
  13. He just tweeted this: Jack Cork (@jackcork1) 2/5/12 4:07 PM However there is a reason.Frank is my grand dads name and Porteous is my mums maiden name. They just happen 2 sound terrible when put 2gether
  14. Reckon he only said it cos he fancies Ms Mordaunt. More seriously, he really shouldn't be trying to influence due legal process.
  15. Hmm, Maynard to WHU, not good...
  16. Deck crew are more likely to survive - each lifeboat officially needed an officer and 2 able seamen to command it as per the regs Similar regs still in place today, which may explain some of the accusations about Costa Concordia crew leaving before passengers. 2 engine rooms were flooded in the initial impact so the engineering crew were already up against it. Virtually all the engineering officers died (hence the memorial by the cenotaph)
  17. MSC ship ran aground in the Caribbean last week, and the Poesia had a major fire in the Baltic last summer, she spent 4 days in Southampton undergoing repairs. Costa are part of Carnival so in theory should be following the same fleet regs as Cunard and P&O. For those with an interest in shipping John Heald's blog from the Splendor fire last year is a great read, if only because he's a snarky lechorous Englishman dumped on an Italian-American ship
  18. Carnival Splendor is her sister ship, that was the one which had a major engine room fire last year and drifted without power. Some reports say the ship lost power before hitting the rocks, or that the Captain deliberately grounded her to save her from sinking in open water. In standard Italian fashion he and the 1st Officer have been arrested for manslaughter and abandoning ship before all souls were accounted for. They're going to get their arses kicked if its true that they hadn't done the muster drill - that should be done prior to leaving port or within the first hour or so at sea. Certainly that's how P&O and Cunard do it...
  19. Spoke to the old man about this today (ex-Merchant Navy). Surprised to hear that those of the crew who survived got a very hard time when they came home to Southampton, as they were living among families in the Chapel who'd lost their men. Accusations of being cowards and not doing their duty etc. Went on for decades afterwards, life-long family feuds.
  20. That casualty list is sobering reading. Not only was it only 1st class passengers who got off, but it was mostly Deck crew who survived. If you were working class on that ship you were doomed.
  21. Because al fayed wanted to sell the Cottage for flats. Fulham played at Loftus road for two seasons I think.
  22. Agreed, assumed that there would be somewhere to buy hot food. Missed opportunity. Comfy seats though!
  23. Awesome tribute from Leeds tonight, 11 minutes of chanting from the 11th minute. Given how much Hull hate Leeds thought their fans paid respects tonight as well. Nice to hear us chanting his name.
  24. RIP, one of those players I wished was English.
