I’m starting to worry that the current owners’ strategy is to focus on cashing in on the transfer values of our most saleable assets while neglecting replacements at the standard required to get us back up asap - ideally this season. Hopefully talks with likely replacements are well advanced but we need to start buying - given the poor quality of some of the players we are likely to be left with. Yes - it’s impressive that we are holding out for the highest possible fees (apparently rejecting Chelsea’s Lavia offer for example). But the clock is ticking and we need some early season momentum with some decent wins off the back of a settled squad. And yes Burnley were a bit shite in their opening games last season - but we don’t necessarily want a poor start and then have to play catch up.

I thought on Friday that our late winner may have papered over some obvious and very serious cracks. Last night’s performance suggested it did. We will know more about how realistic a bounce back promotion is by the end of Saturday’s game. We need to convincingly beat teams like Norwich at home if we have any realistic chance of a one season bounce.

‘If we’ve got the ball they can’t score’. Well that’s worked brilliantly the last few seasons! The point is that possession is only part of the battle. We also need product from periods of possession. Currently we are painfully open to swift counter attacks from even poor teams.
-
Totally agree with this. Obviously pleased we won but teams better than Wednesday will dismantle and punish our slow and ponderous style of play.
-
With rare exceptions Saints always make a shambles of the Transfer Window. Selling late followed by late panic buying. If we are to push for a one season promotion we need to get on with putting a quality team together.
-
Bazunu is not as bad as many people say. McCarthy is far worse. Time to face up to the fact that we are now a Championship team. We aren’t going to attract top shelf goalkeepers.
-
We will win more games when McCarthy is finally dropped and Forster is back in goal

Thought the same thing. Surely Saints aren’t that inept? Though we are of course talking about a club which can’t even send out season tickets on time !

Such a shame history was made without fans in the stadium. Though I am starting to wonder if some of our players are actually performing better without the pressures of a full stadium??
-
TBH, good player though he is, 80% of Grealish’s reputation is built on his ability to cheat fouls and penalties...plus his hairband of course.
-
Lineker needs to have a word with himself about his red card comments. He doubtless thinks that being as overpaid and overrated as he is, his word is Godlike. If the BBC got rid of him and replaced him with someone on 20% of his salary BBC football would be better off IMHO. He’s been around far too long when other younger pundits are far more balanced and much more objective.
-
Get performance. Thoroughly deserved win. One point......how the hell did Redmond get MOTM?? He played ok ish but was probably our worst player on the pitch. If they reverse that red card it will be a massive injustice. If that was a Saints player the pundits would have taken a totally different view... no way was a red harsh for that.

Pleased with today’s result but it should worry us all that without Ings we would probably be in or perilously close to the relegation zone ourselves!
-
It is fact that the north of England starts above the M4 😱
-
Awesome to score in Fergie time. Thoroughly deserved point

When we win 9-0 in a storm?
-
Based on the weather and what happened against Leicester we need to win the toss and play in the right direction in the first half !

Perhaps Arteta is a better judge of decent quality than some on this forum? -

Puzzled as to why so many posters are against VAR. Its accuracy has resulted in far more points for Saints and has finally corrected the bias of refs like the great Kevin Friend. Look at the stats -
And RH does it virtually every game. Predicable. And very poor tactics.
-
Still have doubts about RH’s tactics.
-
TBH the win glossed over what was a bizarre starting formation from RH. When it finally dawned on him that we had been totally overrun in the midfield for 60 minutes he finally made some sensible changes. People might say that he got the substitutions “spot on “ but it begs the question, once again, why he got it so wrong in the first place.

If we can’t beat Watford we need to pack our bags for the championship

A chance for everyone to look at Maddison and dream of what might have been
