You're deflecting, dissembling and contradicting yourself, again. Its you who makes a fool of yourself. No-one else needs chip in. ps I largely wrote the organic certification standards for oilseed rape and advise two of the big supermarkets on purchasing. I always bear you in mind.

Your lack of basic knowledge of an industry closely aligned to your own is frankly staggering. There is no commercially grown GM wheat, it isn't economically viable because the genome is much more complicated and expensive to modify than soya. Just in case you don't know who the USDA are - thats the United States Department of Agriculture. A recent study by USDA scientists shows that genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa has gone wild, in a big way, in alfalfa-growing parts of the West. This feral GE alfalfa may help explain a number of transgenic contamination episodes over the past few years that have cost American alfalfa growers and exporters millions of dollars in lost revenue. And it also exposes the failure of USDA’s “coexistence” policy for GE and traditional crops." http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0143296 https://www.globalresearch.ca/usda-study-confirms-gm-contamination-between-gm-and-non-gm-crops-exposes-failure-of-coexistence-policy/5502386 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) released information about an incident in Alberta where a small patch of unapproved genetically modified wheat was discovered. The wheat plants have a glyphosate resistant herbicide tolerance trait that was developed and tested by Monsanto in open-air field plots fifteen to twenty years ago. The nearest test plot site is over 300 kilometers from where the contamination incident was discovered. http://www.nfu.ca/story/gm-wheat-contamination-incident-reminder-need-better-regulation The Sonoma County Transgenic Contamination Prevention Ordinance No. 6196R took effect in November 2016. The purpose of the ordinance is to protect Sonoma County’s native plants, trees, and animals from transgenic contamination by genetically engineered organisms. Such organisms are also sometimes referred to as genetically modified organisms or GMOs.The ordinance makes it unlawful for any person, partnership, corporation, firm, or entity of any kind to propagate, cultivate, raise, or grow genetically engineered organisms in the unincorporated portions of Sonoma County. https://sonomacounty.ca.gov/Agriculture-Weights-and-Measures/Agriculture-Division/Services/Transgenic-Contamination-Prevention-GMO/ A third of U.S. organic farmers have experienced problems in their fields due to the nearby use of genetically modified crops, and over half of those growers have had loads of grain rejected because of unwitting GMO contamination. http://www.ipsnews.net/2014/03/farmers-address-u-s-data-gap-gm-crop-contamination/

The majority of the 108 laureates don't deny transgenic contamination. Neither do the USDA. hth. Heres some primary reading for you https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s40550-014-0005-8 https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/EU_Comp_Schemes_on_GE_from_MM.pdf https://www.reuters.com/article/us-biotech-crops-contamination/u-s-organic-food-industry-fears-gmo-contamination-idUSN1216250820080312?sp=true https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ac21_report-enhancing-coexistence.pdf

The main argument against GM foods is the genetic contamination of non GM crops and plants and potential environmental problems stemming from that. Its the precautionary principle . Its never been primarily about food safety. Hence why it is logical and consistent to allow in crops but not allow them to be grown in Europe.

I agree about the hysteria whipped up around Johnson - although its just as much to do with his political manoveuring shenanigans and his reputation for rent a quote that has generated it. He wants to draw the spotlight so he shouldnt complain when it goes both ways. Corbyn is probably hostile to Israel but not anti-semitic. He is suffering the same kind of abuse for many of the same reasons as Johnson - they want to be PM and is under much greater scrutiny / attack than Soubry or Grieve.

"The U.S. dollar weakened against the euro on Wednesday after the United States and the European Union agreed to deescalate a transatlantic trade conflict, leaders from the two trading partners announced in a joint statement in Washington. The euro rose to $1.1728 following the report, up 0.4 percent." So after the super duper deal by Trump where he batted Juncker out of the park - the dollar dropped and the euro rose. Looks like the markets agree with me that the EU won the battle.

Pity you still havent figured out that the most economically successful countries are socially liberal. Britain has always been liberal and tolerant
-
Absolute ******** as always. US soya beans have been imported into the EU for years. Recently the amounts have sharply increased as the price has dropped. Why did the price drop? Because China, previously the biggest customer for US beans stopped buying them due to Trumps attitude to them. So Juncker promised to do something which was already happening due to Trumps failure, and in return Trump dropped tariffs. Its clear to everyone apart from you who won that deal.

The dollar is down 8% compared to a basket of world currencies since Trump was elected. So the pound is tanking against an already weak currency. Go us.
-
EU GDP excluding UK is around $14.6 trillion and UK GDP is c$2.6 trn. So GDP is about 5.5 times higher. Multiply £435bn by 5.5 and you get £2.392 trillion. The EU's QE is only £2.142 trn (at £1 = 1.12 euros) so the UK's level is actually higher.

Apart from UK growth crashing from top to the bottom. Every 1% reduction in growth costs us around £18bn pa

You're better informed about the Swiss than me!
-
I haven't read that but can believe its true. Normally you just agree something with a Government and its done. The Swiss have a system whereby lots of issues have to be put to a referendum where it can get rejected. A deal can be struck but not ratified because voters don't like the 'you must do' parts and only support the 'you get' parts. It can lead to years of messy limbo.

I think it could have been drafted better in a couple of places to avoid some of the conflict. 1. Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations. Its perfectly possible that some Jewish citizens are more loyal to the Sate of Israel than the country of their birth. If that wasn't the case you wouldn't see the large numbers of immigration to Israel from places like Russia. So whilst you cannot and should not accuse 'The Jewish people' of such tendencies it should be acceptable to accuse individuals of it where their behaviour warrants it. 2. Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis. Drawing comparison with the Nazis for almost anything is normally a sure sign of a weak argument. But you cannot agree never to do that unless you know what all the policies of the Israeli Government will be in the future.

I know - but the mindset / personality interests me - how you can take something totally implausible and practicably impossible and make it your preferred view of the world. Why does someone who has no knowledge of the Pentagon 9/11 crash other than what they have read on conspiracy sites feel so righteous that he can accuse three charity workers who witnessed it as being deep state agents. Its bizarre and troubling.

Kin ell you're gullible. Have you seriously not considered that if the British government were behind it and wanted to blame the Russians they might have chosen almost anywhere else in the country to do it. Likely in Knightsbridge which is full of Russians and their embassy. But no, they chose the one location which enabled the credulous conspiracists to make a facile link to Porton Down. The fact that if you were the Russian GRU commander wanting to make an example and stir **** then Salisbury is the perfect location to do it seems to have completely passed you by. Yeah I know, its a triple bluff. One of my friends works on Trident warheads at Aldermaston. I'll ask him to smuggle one out, should be easy enough according to you. Then maybe you could hit it with a hammer in a pub car park.

The builder who rebuilt my house (not a chippie so no vested interest) told me "a good fitter can make a cheap kitchen look great, but a bad fitter will make an expensive kitchen look awful". He was right, my Homebase kitchen looks amazing with a decent worktop. Ive no idea how good your DIY skills are but maybe something to think about. also, you can never have too many sockets in a kitchen. Think about how many appliances you've got and where they will go then add some more for occasionally used things like blenders, smoothie machines etc

So your view is that Dawn Sturgess' former partner, current partner and the British government conspired to kill her. Yeah, thats so much more likely.

I prefer Madrid for a fly in fly out. Barcelona is very touristy and pretty grubby in a lot of places. but if you're going for longer Barcelona is well placed for the Pyrenees, beach resorts and Portaventura. You can even drive there in about 10 ten hours if you fancy a road trip. Valencia is great city for a more left field option.

Terrorist Attacks - WARNING: CONTAINS DISTRESSING IMAGES
buctootim replied to sadoldgit's topic in The Lounge
I have no issue with the death penalty for repeat offenders of the most serious crimes (although that would exclude Huntley). But you need to be consistent. You either have a death penalty or you dont. The home secretary shouldn't have the power to decide some offenders should die when we don't have capital punishment here. -
Exactly. The majority of MPs dont want to leave the EU at all, let alone leave with no deal - but they're worried about being hammered by voters who would see it as a betrayal of the 'peoples democracy'. The only way they can square the circle is a second referendum, described, as Trousers said, as a first referendum on the deal (even though remain will inevitably come into the mix somewhere)

Maybe so, but i bet Express readers haven't seen it. I wonder if he is also now a filthy traitor who needs to be deselected.
