Good interview and I learned how to download stuff from imageshack. Thanks all round.

Thats not a valid comparison. Large unions have over 1 million members and (probably) thousands of staff and reps. £140,000pa isnt that much for the size and responsibility of the CEO's job. There are 650 MPs each responsible for a couple of staff and voting how they are told to. Somewhere around £75,000 pa feels about right to me.

They're excited that you can get slightly better than even odds for Pompey to beat Newport (8th in lg2) at home. How the 'mighty' have fallen.......
-
Looks like they found a couple of stray black socks in the white wash too.

Correction: Some do. Some MPs work very little and prioritise paid for lobbying work over constituents problems. Others give their life and soul to it sacrificing family life for better or worse. Those in marginal constituencies probably work and try harder than those in safe seats - but its the safe seats MPs that get returned election after election.

The salaries aren't unreasonable but their pensions are - 1/40th of salary for every year of service, around double that of most public service employees. In 2009 MPs salaries and pension costs were £157m for 650 MPs - around £250,000pa each. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8208590.stm http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-128712/MPs-pensions-25.html

At least it makes it open and transparent. Would it be better if their declared pay was £25,000pa but they got another £50,000 in undeclared benefits?

Wasn't it exactly the reverse? - he was demonstrating to his court the limits of his powers.

A lot of historians think William of Normandy was Edward the Confessors appointed successor. Even if he wasnt he certainly had more a claim to the throne than Harold.

Canute (Knud) was the guy who turned back the waves at Western Shore - before the broken bottles and condoms were there obviously.

Sure we can, but we don't though do we? In Britain overt patriotism is wrapped up with all kinds of other 'values' in a lot of peoples perception. Lots of other countries fly the flag a lot more, even private homes often have it on a flagpole in places like Sweden.

That knocks the nightlife on the head then.

Spartansreturn Posted on 10/12/2013 21:56.. "Scum had a couple of good lads up front but that's about it". http://fansonline.net/portsmouth/mb/view.php?id=527422 Erm if Saints weren't actually very good and we still won 7-0 doesn't that make you even more ****e?

Saints v Skates, F.A. Youth Cup Third Round, Match Thread FULL TIME 7-0!

At what point do you think pity will kick in and Saints will ease off? -
We haven't had a 'other people are ****' or I'm a better fan than you' thread for days, so this was really timely.

I see that with the Cassel Hospital and Goddard Vetinary group both nearby all activities are safely catered for.

Ive always been impressed by a small table and four slightly grimy chairs - much more professional than one of those ostentatious big jobbies with enough room for them to all be able to sit behind.

Thats possibly the best hotel in London, prices to match though.

A team of Academy Products - the Rupert Lowe dream...
buctootim replied to Legod Third Coming's topic in The Saints
Lowe got the academy, Staplewood and SMS just right. Managerial appointments, not so much. On balance he was better than the majority give him credit for. -
I think it involves paying wages every month and on time.

apart from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc

This isnt a political point, just an observation - its odd that one of the main areas of jobs availability is in the NHS given expenditure is flat in real terms. I wonder if a lot of those staff imported from abroad in recent years are now going home. Edit. I suppose they could be private care home workers, ageing population and all that.

In the early part of the war the US lacked the right ships and skills to protect convoys off their eastern shore - so some armed British naval reserve, mainly converted merchantmen were sent to help them (and us out). There is a tiny beautiful British Cemetery containing the only four bodies recovered from HMS Bedfordshire in Ocracoke in the outer banks of North Carolina. Its also the place where the navy killed Blackbeard the pirate. The outer banks, especially the southern end are well worth a visit.

Global warming really is happening... (well, duh!)
buctootim replied to 1976_Child's topic in The Lounge
Liquid in glass thermometers have been around since the 1880s and can measure up to +/- 0.01 degrees - ie two decimal places not three. I've no idea if other more accurate instruments were available, sorry. Its a fair mathematical point, but Im not sure it matters much in practice since the actual range of temperature change is far more than 100ths of degrees. -
Didnt they need Norwegian 'heavy water' in order to produce a bomb - ir at least speed its development.
