Most people seem to respect and trust John Lewis, they pay their 76,000 staff well above industry norms and the company has doubled in size in 10 years to the stage where it now turns over £8.2bn pa. Their head guy earns £500,000pa. Marks & Spencer is very similar in size to John Lewis. Their performance over past 10 years has been pretty poor. They do not pay their 75,000 staff as well as John Lewis. Their head guy earned £4.4 million last year.

Hester is getting unfair treatment as he appears to be quite effective at RBS - he is solving their problems but didnt create them. There is a wider problem with executive pay though - in that it has become unrelated to the performance of the company (whether by share price or profits) and instead is linked to dodgy performance metrics which get fudged. Most the FTSE 100 companies share prices are still languishing around the levels of 15 years ago - but executive pay has rocketed since then. The whole argument about paying to attract the best talent is clearly spurious but a few credulous people still lap it up.

Can well belive it. I was smoker at the time and the legislation seemed draconian and uneccessary to me. However as there became fewer places to smoke and you had to exchange the bonhomie of smoking in a pub with a beer and friends for hanging outside of doors on rainy nights the appeal of smoking gradually diminished. The law was probably the push I need to give up. My circulation is noticeably better. My brother who still smokes had a stent fitted last week....

Maybe. Im no lawyer and so not sure of the legal definition of fraud - but afaik there has to be deliberate intent to deceive and hide assets / income. Seems to me 'arry is trying to play the "oh there was tax to pay? silly me, im just a simple football man' to make it look like accidental cockup rather than conspiracy - ie not guilty of 'fraud'. If successful he would still have to pay the tax of course, but get off the criminal charge.

I used to sit next to a bloke like that at SMS. Was always in my space. I ended up taping a drawing pin to the outside of my knee (use thick gaffa tape and push the point through). Every time time his knee pushed on mine he he looked as though he'd been stung by a bee, but puzzled. Twas hilarious, stopped him doing it sharpish too.

We dont need to sign lots of players. The players we have are good enough to get us promoted, they proved that by holding the top spot for three months. We needed a bit more depth in the squad - and we've signed that. The real problem is the loss of form - and that needs to be cured internally.
