I agree that any 'self-harm experiment' hypothesis is most likely to be conspiracy-theory nonsense... The only trouble is, the tangible evidence to disprove it is fairly thin on the ground... The way I sometimes look at it (albeit with tongue firmly in cheek) is imagine if things would look much different over the last 5 years if this was a wacky Hollywood script whereby a rival fan had infiltrated the club ownership and was attempting to slowly destroy the club from within... They'd be doing a pretty good job so far, wouldn't they...?
