The club previously stated they had made him an offer, he dragged it out and didn't sign. Given the choice of staying at Saints or getting a last big payday at a club in Europe I think it is more the case of Bertrand wanting to leave.

In none of that limited time did he show any glimpses of quality. At least we had occasional sparks of quality from Ramirez & Boufal, even though they ultimately failed at Saints. Elyounoussi did not show any sign of pace, dribbling ability, vision etc that makes it look like he is capable of performing at Premier League level in the role we'd use him.

What is that supposed to mean? He'll have a squad of team mates along side him and he has shown he is more than capable of performing and scoring at this level. A lot of teams in the league would love their second best striker to have scored 9 league goals like Adams did in 2020/21.

@CB Fry is correct, Koeman did confirm that Mane was his choice, but also that the club were monitoring him as well independent of Koeman.

Both can be true at the same time and people from the club (including Koeman) admitted as much. It does not have to be one reason why the club signed them.
