A compliment!

Koeman said he missed training due to illness on Monday, if that is true then its not a surprise he doesn't play two days later, even though he trained on Tuesday and this morning.

How do you know that? Just because Fonte, Alderweireld and Yoshida were ahead of him in pecking order that doesn't mean Koeman doesn't think he is a good player. Just that he preferred the others.

New under 18's manager appointed - Anthony Limbrick
Matthew Le God replied to Matthew Le God's topic in The Saints
Chelsea don't have lots of academy players working with the first team & in match day squads like Saints do. Our best under 21's are with the first team, our best under 18's are with the under 21's, our best under 16's are with the under 18's etc. That all then impacts on the quality of each of the youth sides. The purpose of Southampton's under 18 manager is to produce players for our first team, not solely under 18 results. How many Chelsea youth products have been regularly in their first team since John Terry in the late 1990's? -
Last season he was behind Yoshida in the pecking order.

Youth results are very much 2nd place to progressing and developing players. The under 18's lose their best players a lot of the time when they are used in the under 21's. -

Are they? - finished 13 points below us - goal difference swing between the two sides of 23 goals -

How is it relevant? Outside the top 6 clubs last season, Saints have the highest number of players in their squad that the top 6 clubs would want. -

We were 2 points away from 6th and 4 points away from 5th. For us to have finished above Liverpool all it would have taken is one draw into a win (given our vastly superior goal difference). How is that a glass ceiling? -

We have better players than Swansea, which is why we've finished above them for 2 years in a row. Who in the current Swansea team would be good enough for one of the top 6 clubs? Plus they've still lost... Allen, Vorm, Davies, Bony and Rodgers relatively recently to top 6 clubs. -

Saints are the "best of the rest" and there is a big jump in turnover between us and the 6 teams that finished above us. The quality of our squad mean we have a lot of players good enough for higher placed clubs but not enough in the squad to finish in the top four. The clubs that finished below us like Swansea, Stoke, West Ham, Palace don't have many (if any) players the top clubs will want. Although it may not seem like it when we sell players, us losing a few players every summer to the clubs like we have is actually a good sign. Its when the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea don't want out players then there is a problem, as it would suggest we've dropped in quality and don't have good players in our team. -

How would you have stopped...? - Clyne in the last year of his contract wanting to move to Liverpool for a pay rise & higher profile club to help England prospects? - Schneiderlin wanting to move to Man Utd for a massive pay rise & Champions League football? - We don't know for sure what happened with Alderweireld, but the vast majority of players in world football would pick Spurs over us. - Cork was dropping down the pecking order and unlike the others wasn't first choice. We have the emergence of young central midfielders and Cork wanted regular first team football. -
You've set your sights extremely low. They are all a drop in quality from Alderweireld, lacking in technical ability on the ball and we have no need to "add depth", that is what Yoshida, Gardos & youngsters like Stephens, McCarthy, Turnbull, Wood are for. Saints will need a 1st choice centre back of high quality to partner Fonte. Shawcross is the only one close enough to what we'd need, and although he is a good centre back I think he is a little limited technically and we'd need better. Plus I doubt we could get him from Stoke. The others aren't remotely good enough for us and a huge drop in quality.
