  1. Is there anything worse than a poster starting a thread with an opinion that they don't believe in - just to be on a wind-up? And then they come on later asking not to be patronised by someone who takes their opinion to be sincere. Jeez. As my mother would put it: "Say what you mean and mean what you say."
  2. Denim jeans, I think, were worn originally mostly by cowboys. And then "blue-collar workers" favoured them, because of their comfort and durability. It was only much later - 50s and 60s that they became popular with young people.

  5. Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down by Ry Cooder. An excellent album from one of the greats.
  6. Sad news. She was a dynamic performer. I saw her once in the early 80s at a blues club in Toronto - the Brunswick House on Bloor Street West. A great voice!

  8. Have to strongly disagree. Great film (and highly under-rated). How could it miss with this cast: Julie Christie (yum!), Peter Finch, Alan Bates, and Terence Stamp. Beautifully filmed on the Dorset Coast (I visited several of the shooting locations near Durdle Door and Chesil Beach in 2009). Perhaps it's the Thomas Hardy-factor that turns you off. His plots can be quite depressing - emphasising the cruel hand of fate, etc., etc. But this is one of the films/Tv productions based on his books that I really liked!

  10. Another sub-topic: Are there certain individuals, or certain scenes in comedy or drama that you always come back to when you want to mimic a particular accent? For a Yorkshire accent, I always think of Monty Python: 1) "One o't flayrods gone out askew on treadle", or 2) "We 'ad to lick rord clean wit' tung". For a scouse accent, I try to channel one of The Beatles. For a cockney, I'll mimic Harry H. Corbett: "You dirty ol' man!" Others?

  12. In a related matter: BBC News reports (19 January 2012): Beer 'must be sold' at Brazil World Cup, says Fifa. "Beer must be sold at all venues hosting matches in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, football's world governing body, Fifa, has insisted. Fifa General Secretary Jerome Valcke said the right to sell beer must be enshrined in a World Cup law the Brazilian Congress is considering. Alcoholic drinks are currently banned at Brazilian stadiums and the country's health minister has urged Congress to maintain the ban in the new law. Brewer Budweiser is a big Fifa sponsor. Mr Valcke is visiting Brazil to press for progress on the much-delayed World Cup law. Fifa has become frustrated, because voting on the legislation has been held up in Congress by the dispute over alcohol sales. The Brazilian government has also failed to resolve differences with Fifa over cut-price tickets for students and senior citizens, and demands for sponsors of the World Cup to have their trademarks protected."
  13. I really like the Irish accent (in the south), but dislike the Northern Irish accent. Other related topics: 1) Do you find it easier to imitate particular accents? 2) Do some accents sound better coming out of the mouth of a woman than a man?
  14. Good thread title, BTW!
  15. Meaning what?
  16. Sorry, what's your point?
  17. "The F.A. Cup with Budweiser"? "Budweiser Player of the Round"? Does the F.A. have no sense of dignity? What a disgrace!
  18. Surely the creation of team spirit (which includes the integration of new players into a settled squad) is one of NA's notable skills. He seems to really know how to generate a cohesive group. There should be no problem.

  20. Sorry to interrupt the flow, but you mean Onedin, eh?
