I meant that everything is cheap in the states food, fuel etc. because those things are lightly taxed or heavily subsidised compared to here, they're not really living in the real world.

The Tea Party exists to reduce taxes, that can't happen whatever party is in power, Bush Jnr. overspent massively and reduced taxes at the same time add in two wars it's easy to see where all the money has gone. The whole economy is subsidised by the government, everything from farming to manufacturing exists in its own little bubble.
