Saints 1 Norwich 0 - For Once We Score A Late Winner!
angelman replied to St Chalet's topic in The Saints
The most disappointing player for me was JWP. Now I know it is easy to jump on his back, but today was a perfect opportunity to show what he has in his locker, to dominate the midfield, to create chances. He should be a creator, but no, nothing save for good delivery of dead balls. Not only should he be creative, he should be scoring goals. I guess he should be doing what Lallana did. I really do want him to be a success, but those genius sparks are few and far between and today would have been a perfect time for him. -

All I can say is....thank you Shlong. I was really debating whether I was going to sit through 30 more minutes of that!! -
He signed the contract "he deserved" (although not sure why he deserves it) in October 2015.. That seemed fine up to and including May 2016, but come July 2016 it was no longer any good.

Thierry Henry mk2

Ha - so they are. Tried a couple of hours ago and ticket wouldn't go to basket. So rang up and was told can't buy so close to the game. So ordered one on line now.
-
Shame you can't buy tickets on line on the day of the game. Would probably have made it as I now have the evening freed up, but a nice bottle of something, a fire and a crap stream should suffice on this cold winter's evening.

Unambitious. Much more ambitious to go to a club with less chance of winning the title, and win it with them, rather than go to a "ready made" one.
-
Benji, you might be right. With McCarthy being out, what other choice do we have as 1st choice keeper? Taylor not getting a look in might say a lot about him, as you suggest.
-
Poor little snowflakes!! Still just because it was their idea, doesn't make it a good one. Maybe from within their bubble they think it is. It isn't.
-
What slightly frustrates me, is that we know where we need to strengthen, yet we are half way through the window and have played 3 games this month already - 4 if you include tomorrow's replay. If we are going to be making any signings, it would have been far better to have done them 2½ weeks ago.

It's embarrassing especially when Liverpool are there with their song which everyone sings.

What really annoys me..... Current Season Ticket holders will have until midnight on Sunday 15th May to take advantage of the renewal prices. Between Tuesday 5th April and Sunday 15th May, current unoccupied seats will be available to purchase. This was for renewing your ST and the 15th May was the last day of last season. So the club on the back of a good season entices you to renew your ticket, and then serves up mediocre dross having predictably sold the players that went, and somewhat unsurprisingly bought inferior players who haven't preformed. Coupled with that a change in manager to one who changes the team so damned often, that it is somewhat annoying. Sure you can say that you support Saints and you will go come what may, but I think it a pretty shoddy way of treating your customers, what with taking their custom as guaranteed.

What changes?? I would take Jai27 a bit further and impose a 2 or 3 foreign player limit to your starting XI. I can't recall football in the 1970s/80s being any less exciting than it is today, and I believe that there was a 2 foreign player limit then (but stand to be corrected). I remember recently catching some CL between Man City and Barca, and looking at the City team and wondering what exactly the connection between the players and the supporters was, apart from them playing at a stadium that so happened to be located in Manchester. We are a little better as we like to bring through from the academy, which I think is very important. Get a balance of academy and "imported" players. Keep a link between the club, the players and the community. The players/community link is naturally going to be stronger if you play (local) lads who have come through your academy.

Absolutely. I have never really understood what people mean by it. What is our ambition? To win every game we play. People seem to conflate expectation with ambition. Do we expect to win every game, and thus the PL? No we don't. Does someone like Man Utd or Chelsea? Yes they expect to win every game and this the PL. So how then do you go about winning every game - that's the difference between clubs. We have chosen a path where we don't (yet) shell out silly money (relatively speaking). It seems that spending money equals ambition, pure and simple. But spending huge amounts doesn't guarantee success. Would we be happy if we supported Crystal Palace? So OK they sold Bolasie for big money, but signed Benteke on even bigger money and are languishing in the league. Did they show ambition or were they fool hardy?

Well the silence either means..... ....we are working hard behind the scenes and are trying to tie up a deal - or - .... we are silent because nothing is happening. You choose which one depending on your outlook on things. I try and stay positive and hope that it is the former that is happening to address our somewhat obvious short coming(s). But who knows??

It's all fine and well selling players when we continue to do well and can be served entertaining football. Save for the Liverpool home game(s) it has been dire this season. The Europa failure being the most disappointing. Maybe Ralph takes the fan base for granted, but you serve up mediocre rubbish and it will be financially troublesome. Add the fact that when we see our ex players doing well, and playing against us, that is quite disheartening. We all know players come and go, but ours seem to go rather easily. You hear reasons that they only come to us because they know that they can move on, but that is far too defeatist. So sell Bertrand, Fonte, VVD etc and replace with perceived cheap options and I think that this time it will probably alienate a lot of supporters. Many like me will probably still come as we have for decades, but you can shove your pathetic and patronising "Southampton Way" where it belongs, as I suspect not many of your customers are travelling the same path.

I've been waiting 2½ seasons for him to breakthrough and show us what he has and what he can do. I did that with Gaston as well and he turned out to be a disappointment. JWP should have taken over the Lallana role and be scoring 10 goals a season. But he hasn't and doesn't. Now I am supportive of all our players, and feel that some need time to show us what they are made of. But unfortunately sometimes time runs out and you have to cut your losses rather than keep on flogging a half dead horse.

I don't bother often coming on after we lose. Not worth it. As for social media, I don't bother with that. People who I don't care about (not least as they are usually pseudonyms) giving their opinions which I care even less about. I think we all know the problems that we face. At the start of the season, while I knew it to be a risk, was prepared to see how it turned out. Now 20 odd games in, it is clear that it hasn't worked well, so from that point of view, I have to agree that the management have cocked up. A wasted season both in Europe and in the league. The former bothers me a lot more. The latter, I am more pragmatic about. We have come back to the PL and seem to think that we are "the best of the rest" - not sure why that should be so really. Anyway, name calling is utterly pathetic. Intolerance of opposing views on here is equally pathetic. Maybe that reflects the general level of intelligence of the average poster. But then again, there are a few posters who post in a haughty manner which is equally pathetic.

We aren't an easy book to read..... We might well think that we are OK with what we have and not look for a striker. Maybe we are looking for one. Who knows? Whichever it is, we do not come across as being desperate by mouthing off in the press like WHU do, so hopefully prices do not get ramped up. I guess the signing of Austin goes to prove a point - maybe.
-
Well, if Liverpool took Stephen Caulker then why not Fonte. Expect him to play in the secondary striker role.
-
I'd find it funny if he went there. How sad of Liverpool to just come shopping at Saints.
-
Pelle I have no problem with. Austin was his replacement. Problem I do have is that if Austin got injured, which he has, there is no one to get the goals. That was risky and turns out to be costly. I guess the plan was to rely on Long and Rodriguez. Risky and foolhardy

Is the quality of football any better now than 20/30/40years ago?
angelman replied to OldNick's topic in The Saints
To me a very important question is whether the standard of competition is any better. With the top 6 pulling away, then the answer to that is obvious.
