Grammar and Spelling Mistakes Which Annoy You
Whitey Grandad replied to Lighthouse's topic in The Lounge
Fewer/less is not as definitive as some like to make out. In broader terms English usage is defined by how it is used. Edit: I see what you did there -
"the ball would have hit the stumps" is not a fact, merely and estimation.
-
Well said Professor. I agree with you all the way.

Post-match reaction: Saints 2-0 Aston Villa
Whitey Grandad replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Indeed, there are all sorts of opinions. I would just like to point out that we lost that final 3-2 so to argue that we would have won it with VAR is stretching things a bit. Also we should remember that for every VAR decision that went in our favour there could have been some that went against. Let's not forget also that our European campaign was a dismal flop. -
We are perennial candidates with occasional lucid spells. Let’s enjoy this one while it lasts.

8th is a total irrelevance. We ended level on points with Bournemouth. You might like to look up the final points total to see how bad we were. The football was direr than dire. -
Not this season anyway.

Yes, but not by much an yes, partly. Fog is due to moisture in the air as much as anything.

I came back from Boston about 40 years ago in less than five hours. Then spent a further six hours in a hold over a Oxford, flying up to Prestwick to refuel and then flying down to Heathrow. Something about the fog. Will global warming mean less fogs?

The small things in life that bring you joy
Whitey Grandad replied to trousers's topic in The Lounge
When I was a kid growing up at Dovercourt when there was a storm I used to love going and sitting behind the wall on the promenade whilst the waves were breaking over the top of it. -
I think one of the main arguments is that it frees up capacity on the existing lines. Why it doesn’t call at Heathrow is completely beyond me.

Not to like? Because it could very well be money down the drain. Wouldn’t it be better to improve other transport infrastructure more widely? South Hampshire is crying out for a tram system and what ever happened to our south coast motorway all the way to Dover? No, the Tories are only interested in buying votes up North. If Southerners are too stupid and keep voting for them regardless then no public money will ever come our way.

One example doesn’t make a probability.

We also have a better knowledge of the jet streams today and can take more advantage of them.

Too right! We are in Sydney for a few days and Sunday was unbelievable. Parts of Sydney had over 200mm of rain in 24 hours and this was on top of the previous few days of torrential downpours. Severe disruption on the railways and widespread flooding all along the East Coast. These prolonged rain storms are caused by an ‘East Coast Low’ and are not common events occurring every ten to fifteen years. But the widespread fires occur on a similar frequency. According to the authorities some 18% of them are caused by arson or suspicious activity. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/parks-reserves-and-protected-areas/fire/fire-facts

You are not blind. Gunn gets a touch on the ball with his foot before his hand brushes Son’s shorts. Ball before man, perfectly legal. With proper officiating we might have got extra time out of that. What is the point of VAR?

Only if we didn’t find a replacement.

Cedric Soares - Official: Loaned to Arsenal

He might be fit by the time we play them on 22nd March. -

It could be something to do with not wanting him as an asset on our books just yet. -
It doesn’t need to state it, I would have thought it was bleedin’ obvious. If the motorway wasn’t busy then it wouldn’t have been in ‘smart’ mode.
-
Do you mean pull over from the central lane into another lane with the same amount of traffic?
-
TV and the European competitions and their money and the big teams now dominate everything. The magic went out of football some time ago.

Apart From safety they don't seem to actually increase traffic flow. https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-7426929/Half-drivers-avoid-using-hard-shoulder-smart-motorway.html

The stopped vehicle detection systems are not reliable. https://www.motoringresearch.com/car-news/smart-motorways-dont-always-detect-broken-down-cars/ "According to documents obtained by The Sunday Times, there is no way to detect a stopped car when the volume of traffic exceeds a certain level. Similar issues occur when speeds drop to crawling pace. On average, drivers spend 17 minutes in live lanes before they are detected as being stationary."

They used to but the police decided that they need longer to prepare. There were times when multiple replays were held within a couple of days of each other, sometimes Tuesday then Thursday.
