  1. Sadly the English don't get a vote. We are going to get all the talk and discussion and media coverage over the next year about something that we have no say in.
  2. It matters not where I went, only that this was what was taught in the law faculty at that time. The Poll Tax failed because of the widespread opposition to it, in other words it did not have the acceptance of the public. I think that what I said is not quite the same as what you say I said: 'You cannot pass a law that is not supported by a large majority amongst the people it affects.' That is not to say that laws have not been introduced that were opposed by some of the population. The main point is that you cannot enforce large changes in public behaviour just by passing a new law, there must be a large measure of support for it or it runs the risk of failing.
  3. I can't stand Alex Jones. That horrible whiny voice.
  4. He wasn't a jerk. Nice knees though.
  5. That's what my neighbouring fellow students at Cambridge told me in there first few days of lectures. The Poll Tax debacle more or less proves the point. My main point is that in general the law tends to follow the prevailing sentiment at the time. You can't force a new behaviour on a populace that is not prepared to accept it.
  6. Yeah, whatever. Lots of laws in England are based on precedent.
  7. One of the first lessons at law school is that you cannot pass a law that is not supported by a large majority amongst the people it affects.
  8. We are not telling them what to wear, we are telling them what they can't wear.
  9. The wearing of a niqab is not compulsory in Islam so it is not a matter of respecting somebody's religious beliefs. No-one is objecting to the other manifestations of the religion such as headscarves. I am insulted by a woman who completely covers her face because the implication is that I might have lustful or unworthy feelings towards her. I am offended because she feels the need to appear in public incognito. Whatever you might feel about UKIP this behaviour is not part of British culture and tradition.
  10. Yes, I really think it would have. I also believe that it would disappear more quickly if the question of race or skin colour were allowed to die a natural death. Every time that it's pointed out that somebody is a different colour, or the first black person to do this, that or the other the differences between us are being emphasised. I have heard interviews on BBC Radio 4 where the subject's skin colour has been mentioned and discussed when the listener would otherwise have been totally unaware. Every time that we are asked to complete a form stating our ethnic origin we are perpetuating the divisions that used to exist in our society. I hope that I live long enough to see the day when somebody's skin colour, or ethnic origin or private sexual life is no more important than the colour of their hair or the colour of their eyes. For that reason I am against wearing rainbow shoelaces or any other public display which will only serve to prolong prejudices, perceived or otherwise.
  11. Well done! Now you mention it, I think that's what I did
  12. The whole operation in a two minute time lapse: http://www.francetvinfo.fr/faits-divers ... 13515.html Edit: I've just noticed the video on The Mail web page.
  13. You all seem to be remarkably flippant about the deaths of twelve people.
  14. The text editor is the box at the bottom of the screen where you enter you contribution to the debate. I had the same problem as you for a while but as you can see it's working now. All I know is that I cleared out all my browsing history a couple of weeks ago. We need an expert on this forum software.
  15. You're looking for problems where none exist.
  16. Why not wait a couple of days and then you won't have to wait?
  17. Problem? What problem?
  18. How would I know they were students? I would feel the same is students came in dressed as Muslim women.
  19. Me too.
  20. I had that for a while. It's something to do with the text editor. I normally use Tapatalk so I'm not sure if its still doing it. Clear cache & cookies?
  21. I was there for the 3-2. Sat next to me in the Saints end was someone who had been a Liverpool fan since a little boy but was now living in Southampton and had brought his girlfriend with him. He was telling her how his dad used to bring him and pointing out to her where he stood in the Kop. When our third goal went in he stood up and said to her "Right, we're off". As they left she whispered to me "Actually, I was rather enjoying it".
  22. As I said, I don't care about anybody's sexuality. What I don't like are the constant references to it in the media. So your gay, so what? I don't go around telling everybody my sexual preferences but being gay seems to be a dominant topic amongst the chattering classes.
  23. I hardly noticed him in either of the two home games, which is a good sign. I think.
  24. Exactly. I really don't care about anybody's sexuality but I wish they'd keep it to themselves and not try to ram it down my throat.
  25. I think it was the swipe commands that really got him interested.
