Not league 1 with potential, or championship knows the manager but crap last year. Cheap yes. Squad fillers? Yep. Better than we have? Probably not. Hence not improving the squad. We need to recruit first team starters, not squad fillers. They won’t keep us up. That’s recruitments job to select the right players. I genuinely can’t name anyone - I don’t play football manager, nor do I study obscure players in Norwegian/ Swedish/South American leagues. But I sure hope the club does…

There is no problem. We are assembling a squad ready to push for promotion in the 2025/26 season. Because we will be in the championship next season if that is our ambition and standard of signing. Two cbs with not a moment of prem experience between them, one from a crap Swansea team, who was also crap himself, and one from a league 1 side. They may be cheap, but buy cheap buy twice…..we never learn really. If we seriously think we will be playing out from the back and staying up I give you Burnley. Look at the Forest and Brentford squads. They are who we need to finish above. We won’t * yes I know we are in early July, and could sign some great players, but I get a cheap and cheerful vibe. Martin will be sacked after 10 games and 5 points. Then what with his team all signed? Yep, shoot me down for not believing, but I’m not seeing a prem team forming (yet).

If we do sign McCarthy on a deal, it may just keep us up. Not because he’s an amazing stopper, but because he isn’t a twinkle toes with the ball at his feet. Once Bazunu got injured we changed our style, stopped so many suicidal playing out from the back moves and became more variable, mixed up some long balls, less predictable. Playing tippy tippy pass out from the back every match in the top flight would see us get some huge beatings. Mixing it up might help our cause - we aren’t good enough playing Man City style with bottom 6 players. Burnley proved it doesn’t work last year. 🤞 we do sign a proper keeper rather than the same old same old, but I rather fear we are going cheap and not so cheerful. But better than Baz anyway. Bar obviously set very low here…

We have TH-B, and need another 4 first team starters (not squad fillers) as a minimum. Flynn Downes could be one (hopefully🤞), another CDM who is a physical presence and a ball winner/strong tackler, a GK, and at least one striker. I would also hope we can secure Ryan Fraser as he will be low cost and is a decent impact sub, if not a guaranteed starter. Also need to be ruthless with the ones who just aren’t good enough - Mara, Sulemana, Charles, Manning, possibly Edozie (he never quite delivers). The currently out on loan players Perraud and Bella-Kotchap could do a job if they are up for it. Not Lyanco. Possibly tall Paul? He never really got a chance or a regular start in the side, could he do a job? Lots of ins and outs, but we have got to get it right, quality not quantity. Starters not fillers or potential ones for the future.

Bazunu is taller than Jordan Pickford and Hugo Lloris. Both of whom are/have been brilliant keepers! Height helps but certainly is not the be all and end all. Talent most definitely comes first Sadly Baz isn’t blessed with as much as he needs.

You are correct. Smallbone is far more consistent. Consistently meh. If we go up I hope he’s nowhere near the team because he’s a nothing player. He’s lower midtable championship standard. Stoke was his level. Mind you if we don’t go up he will be exactly what we need as we will be midtable nothings too…

I’d say we don’t score enough with our 70% possession - 2 or 3 goals per game should be 4 or 5 goals. The issue is and has been for the last 4 seasons we are weak up front. Can’t take the chances we create and we fix that by buying a forward who was already broken, to not play alongside Che barn door Adams. Adam Armstrong has proved he’s a decent championship striker (which we knew) but even he misses plenty. Regardless of how we go up (which we hopefully will) we would need to buy two quality strikers to have any chance of staying up, which we almost certainly can’t afford and therefore our eternal create lots can’t finish them Problem will continue.

The Saints manager and players are role models for kids of every age. I’ve coached boys from 7 to 15 and they sadly will copy what they see the professionals do. Being sporting losers (and winners!) is a great life skill for young people to learn. It doesn’t make grass roots coaches jobs easier when the role models act (excuse the pun) like kids. No excuse for it in professional sport, but a lot of professionals don’t think for a moment about how their on pitch antics willl be copied and idolised by the young generation. Don’t even get me started on play acting and feigning injury….(Fernandez v Fulham ‘injury’ anyone?).
