It depends on what you mean by derailing a thread. If you challenge a comment made and a sub discussion on a thread develops about that comment then I can't see the problem with that.

And the better striker will take chances a not so good one won't, he'll make runs, find space, be able to position himself and finish difficult chances, similarly better creative player will create chances a not so creative player won't, make runs others can't etc. to say the vast majority of goals come because of errors is the usual MLG nonsense. Some do, some come from good attacking play and some come from your perspective as you rightly say.

Surely scoring a sitter is down to bad defending not good positioning, no skill needed at all.

He said most goals we scored and conceded last season came from from defensive errors. So from his perspective signing strikers better than we have is pointless as we'll score anyway from errors, therefore from his perspective we should sign the best defenders we can. Hope that helps.
