He was a very good player, not a great player. Was that tier below the top, top players of his generation. But unlike a lot of players that play for England he was fully commited and deserved to be captain. His performances against Greece where he single handedly dragged the team into the finals was the finest display by an Engalnd player in a generation. And by all accounts he's a top guy as well.
