With this talk of 'managing when we sign players' or words to that effect in MP's recent presser, I have a feeling that, ideally, Saints would like to make a big impact with the fans and the media by announcing 2 or 3 big signings at once. Perhaps 2 tomorrow plus Shaw??

Look, when we signed him there was no guarantee that we'd get promoted. We might have spent a few seasons in the championship, in which Billy may have served us well. Obviously the club felt that he didn't fit for some reason when we did get promoted. Harsh, yes. Fair, maybe. If he'd been scoring a hatful for forest then I'm sure we'd be having him back.

We seem to mostly be going for young players of high quality that could claim to be good enough to play for bigger clubs than us, or at least for clubs in a better position than us, ie CL. The trouble at the moment seems, to me, to be persuading those players to come to us while we are in this position of potential. We have also been linked to a few older players that I dismissed at first for being too old for our vision but I now think this could be a good idea. We need the kind of players that will really make a difference and push us on into a team capable of competing for a place in Europe. It could be that an older player that perhaps would not be pushing for a move to a top 6 club, such as Defoe or similar, could make that difference, so that next season we are in a more appealing position to sign those younger players.

You could go anywhere and get a polo shirt that looks near as dammit the same as a ralf Lauren or whatever brand you care to think of for a fraction of the price.
