I suspect the 4-5-1 was employed yesterday because of the quality of the opposition. We'd have been torn apart for the whole 90 minutes rather than just the second half if we'd gone with a 4-man midfield, IMO.

A relief to be back. Enjoyed that, to be honest - first half we played pretty well and gave them a decent test. Well taken goal by Mills and how the ref gave that penalty I'll never know. Second half when we made changes it was always likely to give them a bit more impetus and they tore us to bits, understandably. At the end of the day, they're a very good side who will be one of the leading clubs in the Europa League this season. Losing 4-1 and running out of steam against a side of their calibre is no disgrace.

Solent will still be broadcasting home and away, as far as I'm aware.

To be honest, that last comment was always going to come back to bite you - there was no way they could have bowled as badly as they did at Cardiff. It just so happened that they pretty much went in the completely opposite direction.

Agreed. It'll be interesting to see the performances/effort from the likes of Lallana and Rasiak tomorrow, given that they've been among the most maligned so far this pre-season. It's amazing how players can raise their game when they're genuinely playing for their places...

To be fair, Nick, from the handful of Pompey games I saw on telly last season, Campbell was pretty woeful. They do appear to be doing their best to start the season with a squad of 6 players...

Got to say I'm absolutely delighted with this appointment. Experience at this level, experience higher up as well, with success at those levels as well.

I don't quite understand why people were wetting themselves over the prospect of Strachan coming back. He did a fantastic job here the first time around, but by the time he left it had gone very stale, and history tells us that returning managers are never much good the second time around.

As a club starting League One with a ten-point deficit, if we can attract a manager with significant Premier League, Championship AND League One experience, I'll be absolutely delighted.
