Fry fiddles (not in the corrupt sense) while Rome burns
the stain replied to OldNick's topic in The Saints
Hope you won't mind me distilling your post, this thread and the majority of the Main Board, thusly: I'm off to let a thing I can't control pan out inexorably. Someone PM me when it's over -
There's that and there's the way that every single debate, decision, u-turn, awful fuq up or PM's fart is sold to us as a tremendous victory for the government and a great leap forward for the British people. Just be honest and say a bad thing has happened and you're trying to put it right, maybe people will respect you more. If only all the people who thought that way would vote Lib Dem...

People who over-exaggerate EVERYTHING

This is the only bit you need to pay attention to...

About the time they repealed Clause 28 and couldn't pick on gays anymore?
-
The 'chav' assumption is in poor taste too. When did it become cool to vilify the working class?

People who say 'over-exaggerate'. 'Exaggerate' not strong enough for you, Mr 110%? -
Village of the Damned. I like a bit of John Carpenter,me. And this one has Christopher Reeve and Mark Hammill in it! A whole town (seemingly the same town as in The Fog) passes out cold. When they wake, all the women are pregnant with evil alien kids who kill. It's got all the classic Carpenter hallmarks; flamboyant over-acting, unknown terror, spasmodic violence, state-of-the-nation subtext. Probably not his best, but a winning formula. Much, much better than the other 'evil blank-faced children' film I saw recently, The Children. Britain's finest TV advert actors get their plummy faces hacked off by their heartless, vomiting spawn. Much worse than it sounds.

So despite beating the top side, and despite my 10 victories on the bounce since taking over, second place managed to score a narrow win and leave me 1 point shy of promotion. Disappointing stuff and not really my fault, but I am going to absolutely spank this division next season.

You were doing so well until then. Realising that just makes it harder, it doesn't stop it making sense.

Magister Ludi (or The Glass Bead Game), by Hermann Hesse. I read Steppenwolf as a teenager and it, like, really spoke to me. But the intervening years have made me revise my opinion somewhat. Don't really hold with his notion of the superiority of the artist as a 'great soul' anymore. Fortunately with this later book he seemed to have integrated the artist with the world and this book reads a little like a discussion with his own former ideals. Unfortunately the sometimes spectacularly beautiful flowers of spiritual insight are set against an extremely dusty narrative. Worth persevering with but could've been much shorter. Some People Are Crazy, biography of John Martyn (can't remember the author). As usual with music biographies, the writing's not brilliant. But his story makes it worthwhile (puts many hard-living rock stars in the shade) and has made me want to dig into a few corners of his career previously barred to me by the words 'Phil' and 'Collins'.

What proportion of the week would you say you are here?

There should certainly be a law against him continuing to make records about how he once used to make records in the 60s, y'know, with The Beatles. His solo work is the musical equivalent of those Cilla Black fronted life insurance ads. In fact Cilla and Ringo should be forced to copulate, then at the point of croaking scouse ecstasy they should be dipped in molten gold and set as a Fab monument atop the Liver building, for future generations to revere.

Another win for Amon Duul III, albeit at the cost even even more injuries. And now we come to crunch time. One point of second place, one match to go. I've got to beat the champions elect and hope for a favourable result elsewhere. And I've got to hope I don't suffer any more injuries in the midweek friendly or I may not be able to field a side at all...

Oo, you sauce-pot!

This has made a bad day much more bearable. Thank you.

I had fish & chips. They made me feel a bit ill. Stupid England

I can think of nothing more emblematic of Englishness than SRS sat on his own in the pub, getting smashed and singing.

My sister had this problem. She's had to get a crazy brace thing fitted. It's see-through though, so you won't look like that one out of All Saints.
