The 1979 league cup final extended highlights
Kenilworthy replied to The Majestic Channon's topic in The Saints
You could always watch the film 'Yesterday's Hero' where the match footage was used to show the FA Cup final between Windsor and Leicester Forest. -
Tomorrow my Astra will clock up 300,000 miles. I bought it with 8,000 on the clock in 2005. I made a sort of bet with myself about not changing it until Saints were back in the Premiership, but not sure it will last quite that long

Wallace because he knew what he was doing. Delap's total lack of ability when playing for us suggests his effort was luck.

That goal at Coventry was perhaps the most sublime team goal ever scored by Saints. Had it been scored by Liverpool it would have been replayed constantly on TV. Yet ask most Saints fans and strangely it doesn't ever seem to feature in their top 10 goals. What made that day great is that we came from behind to play Coventry off the pitch in a game when our keeper was allegedly looking for a different result.

Biggest Flop Signing & Low Expectation That Came Good

were ANY of Ian Branfoot's signings a success? Dave Beasant was an initial disaster but was player of the year in 95-96 -
Biggest Flop Signing & Low Expectation That Came Good
Kenilworthy replied to Gemmel's topic in The Saints
Going back some time, Charlie George was a massive disappointment. A wonderful player that rarely did it for us apart from a couple of fantastic games due to injury - he was injured when we signed him and hardly played in his first season. In fact it was 8 months after signing that he made his debut at the Dell. It was a long drawn out battle between us and West Brom to sign him as well, for £400,000 which wasn't far off the British transfer record at the time. In the end he only played 52 games in 3 years for us. From the same era, a player who did unexpectedly well was Peter Wells. He only came from Nottingham Forest reserves at a time when we were going through keeper after keeper, yet he played a major role in getting us promotion and was with us for 7 years. -
No St Mary's multi ball system in 2011/12
Kenilworthy replied to Matthew Le God's topic in The Saints
Multiball is a great idea in theory. In practice I am not sure it worked out so well - look at how many times we ended up with two balls on the pitch. What really needs attention is time wasting by keepers. Changing the rules to allow them to take a goal kick from either side was meant to speed the game up. In reality it now gives them the licence to waste time by always taking the kick on the opposite side from where the ball went out. -
Has anybody ever seen in reality the two distinct 1976-77 versions ? They were hardly used in the league but were featured in the cup winners cup, especially in the home and away legs against Carrick Rangers, but even then the players wore a mix of shirts. I have always thought it was not so much a question of an alternate design so much as a duff batch with the red stripe in the centre.

New Years Eve 1977. Beat Stoke 1-0 at the Dell to begin the push for promotion then off to see Star Wars at the Empire Leicester Square - a great day all round.

February 15 1969, home against Newcastle was my first ever league game at the Dell. My Dad gave the man on the turnstiles 'a drink' and lifted me over. It ended 0-0 but I was hooked. The season was nearly over but there were still great treats to be had - coming back from 2-0 down to beat QPR (and Rodney Marsh) 3-2, thrashing Burnley 5-1 on Easter Monday with Bobby Stokes scoring on his debut and then beating Manchester City the week before they played in the cup final, with Mike Summerbee more interested in banter with the home fans than playing. It was also the season we won the Combination Cup, beating West Ham 3-1 over two legs and my first pitch invasion. I too went to St Marks School that used to back on to the Dell - the classroom was a Nissan Hut that leaked when it rained. But the year after I started it moved down Archers Road to the old Central School where it is now

Yes I did it on the common in 1966. The week after passing I fell off my bike on the pathway just by the Cowherds. Spent 7 weeks in traction in the RSH including Christmas. The awards were actually presented in a ceremony at the Civic Centre. Did it again in about 1969 - still have the Knight of the Road badge sponsored by News of the World. The instructor was a very old chap who had been a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps during WW1. My 10 year old son is actually doing it this week but at his school after lessons.

Yes I did mean 1991. In fact it was 84 against Liverpool and 91 against Liverpool

It is easy to be wise with hindsight. But a manager who came in to the club in say 2001 and produced anything like Nichol's record over 6 years - good cup runs, no serious relegation battles - would have been regarded as a god. Let's not forget either that he was our last manager to achieve league wins at Old Trafford and Highbury. Nicholl's problem was that he was in charge at a time when football was changing profoundly. We had just seen the rules changed so that home teams kept all their gate receipts instead of sharing them with the away side. And even before the advent of SKY, live television was starting to concentrate the money into the hands of the chosen few. Saints were not picked for a single live league game, home or away, between 1984 and 2001. At the time I worked out that Liverpool, on TV all the time, were £1 million a season better off than use before a ball was kicked. That seems chickenfeed now. But in 85 a million could make a real difference - Everton signed Lineker from Leicester for £900,000 so in terms of spending power nowadats that's a Torres. I wonder how McMenemy would have fared had he stayed on, working under the changing circumstances? My guess is better than Nicholl but still probably unable to recapture the glory of 80-84.

You need to be there at 12.30 ish and they usually go in by the side entrance just along from the Megastore

Memories of the 77-78 season, when we last won promotion.
Kenilworthy replied to CLOTH EARS's topic in The Saints
The 1976 cup final team only played one match together again, and that was the Charity Shield. We started 77-78 with Ian Turner in goal but he had injury problems and after a few games back in January Wells took over for the run in. The signing that made the difference was Chris Nicholl, who had been promoted in his first season with all the clubs he played for. Bringing in Phil Boyer to recreate the partnership with Macdougall was also a master stroke. One of my main memories of the season isn't from the league, but of playing Grimsby in a second FA Cup replay at a freezing and foggy Filbert Street. -
Three out of the four relegations in our history - 74, 2005 and 2009 - we have gone down with Norwich. So them not being in the same division as us would ensure safety next season. For similar reasons I was hoping that Orient would go up via the playoffs.
-
While the Withdean is an awful stadium, we can't say we haven't enjoyed playing there as we never lost - 3 wins and 1 draw in 4 visits. The worst league ground I ever went to - although not with Saints - was Northampton's old ground which was 3 sided as it was used for cricket. With Saints it would have to be Oxford's Old Manor Ground - crumbling open terrace or shoebox like temporary stand with toilets as dark and dank as the dungeons at Warwick Castle.
-
The match announcer demonstrated a complete lack of class with his 'mind the gap' annoucements, the constant references to being champions and his oh so witty selection of music, like 'making plans for Nigel'. I hope we never stopp so low at St Marys
-
Liverpool won the league by 3 points. That's hardly running away with it. They went out of the cup early so didn't miss league games while our run to the semi-final meant we had some catching up to do ie 3 games in the last week of the season - Birmingham away on the Saturday, West Brom away on the Monday and Notts County away on the Thursday.
-
Also in 442 he refers to our old ground as 'the Den' and says that Benali 'had' a curry house 500 yards away - he had obviously never walked there. But anyone who can pick a best ever Saints team without Keegan or Paine but including Cockerill has rather dubious credentials as a celebrity fan.
-
I was sat behind the dugout and Puckett was stripped and ready to come on but Lawrie couldn't seem to make his mind up on the sub. That result hurt more than losing the final in 2003 because we were far and away the better team and didn't do ourselves justice, as we proved three days later when we thumped them in the league at the Dell. Next season Everton built on the impetus of the cup win to become champions and I can't help but think that might have been us.

I've got every shirt from '76 onwards except the 3 obvious ones. The 'Air Florida' all red strip only worn once away at Blackburn. The Yellow Hummel 3rd shirt witha white and green trim that was worn at Spurs, QPR and Luton and the White Hummel 3rd shirt with black chevrons on the sleeve that was worn at Liverpool. None of these were ever made available to the public. Yes that all red shirt could well be the rarest Saints shirt ever. However it did get more than one one outing as it was worn at QPR and West Brom that season. In fact the design made its debut at West Brom away in September 1980, but then it would have had Rank Xerox sponsorship - although if the game was on TV it would be a plain version as sponsors couldn't be shown on TV until 83. The yellow Hummel shirt was first worn away at Derby in September 89. It wasn't used at QPR, but it was used at Luton, Spurs and Arsenal. The white third shirt made its debut in the last away game of the 87-88 season at Liverpool. Next season it was almost the 2nd choice shirt being worn at Manchester United, Charlton, Middlesbrough, Forest, West Ham and Villa. Does anyone have a genuine old gold shirt from the 60s? I would love to see one.

Ticket Prices - The Future? CL Final at Wembley
Kenilworthy replied to dubai_phil's topic in General Sports
The problem is that they won't have any difficulty selling tickets at those prices. After all, many Saints fans were happy to pay £50 for the JPT final. And to put it in context, we are paying £25 a ticket for some League One games this season. As long as mugs like us keep handing over the cash then the clubs will keep charging. The relative cost of tickets for football compared with other forms of entertainment is astonishing - even the best seats in cinemas (outside London that is) are still less than £10. -
Have the people in charge not realized that every change they have made away from the traditional format so far has resulted in the cup becoming less popular eg penalties, so you can win a tie by not actually having to win, midweek quarter finals a couple of years back - really caught the public imagination, playing the final before the last league game of the season, semi-finals at Wembley so diluting the magic of getting there. What is really needed are not steps forward but several steps backward. However, what I really think will happen is that the chosen few in the Premiership will go straight into the last 16, leaving the rest of us just playing for the honour of getting to play them. Whatever happens though, inevitably we will end up playing Manchester United.

Does anyone remember the fantastic toy shop on Shirley Road called Hilroys. It was where the car sales lot now is next to St Mark's School. It must have closed about 1967, It's also hard to believe that Currys was once one of the best toyshops in Southampton, in the 60s - they were where Maplins now is.
