I think that someone else has answered this. You cannot talk to the player until the bid is accepted and its at that point you find that the player (or his agent) has a hugely inflated view of their own value. Is Hooper a better forward than Lambert? If he isn't then we should not be paying him more than Lambert irrespective how much we have had to pay Celtic in order to talk to him.

I doubt if any of the Hype emanated from us, it is not NC's style - more likely to be the other club trying to force the price up

Yeah, I'm up for that - why don't we do a Pompey? - pay whatever stupid fees and wages people ask of us, have a nice bright afternoon in the sun and then just think of all the super times we can have putting anguished posts on here as our club goes out of existence.

Or the problem lies with players whose wage demands exceed commonsense. The fee we have to pay is reflective of the value the player has to the selling club who don't want to lose them. The wages are reflective of their value to us. Fee and wages are only very loosely connected. Whatever we offer, it is bound to be significantly more than they are already getting.

I don't think that any amount of sitting and thinking will come up with a fairer rule. Of course it is a p1sser to lose 6 points if have already played them twice but that is just how the cookie crumbles. They could just as easily have lost to them twice. It is a p1sser if a referee awards a penalty against you for what is later shown to be a clear dive but there is nothing you can do about it. C'est la vie.

You can if you have an agenda and Dune has got one. He has attacked Cortese since he got here for reasons best known to himself and I am really surprised that people keep rising to the bait. If you ignore him he will go into a huddle with Hypo and a few of his mates - but so what - we needn't bother with him!

You are being pedantic. The bid is clearly being made on the basis that he is seen as having the potential to be a premier league striker otherwise why waste time on it. The pedants on here were also saying that Lambert wasn't a championship striker. Well he is now! Leon Best wasn't a premiership striker - well he is now.You buy a proven PL striker then you pay a lot of money. But a potential PL striker then you pay less. However, there is a risk and the key is in judging the magnitude of the risk. I am assuming our backroom team have carried out that risk assessment

Nice to see a rational discussion in the dross that infests this entire thread - even from normally sensible posters.

Hooper is clearly a decent striker, but is he £6m worth of decent striker? If we do go in for him at that price - or more- then we will just have to trust to the fact that Adkins knows him well enough to think that he will make a decent premiership striker. Lets face it, Reading took a couple of players from the League of Ireland - which makes the SPL look like La Ligue (spelling?) - and they didn't do so badly. If he doesn't spend that money then he must have some doubts. Either way, I'll trust his judgement.
