I think you might be right - but the club still need to strengthen the current squad if we are going to bounce back in one season after accepting relegation this season
-
What did we learn yesterday? That we move the ball to slowly and lack pace. But we already new that! That we probably don't have the players to play 4-3-3. Certainly not at this level. Lambert is too slow and nowhere near mobile enough to lead the line and we have no real pace down the wings. If we are going to persist with 4-3-3 Rodriguez needs to start in the middle as at least he's bit some pace, De Ridder on the right as he's got the pace we need and is used to playing this way from his time in Belgium/Holland and Lallana on the left where he's got the space he needs to make a difference. That Lambert is not a premiership class centre forward. He lacks the pace and mobility needed. That's not to say he won't score goals or be a good player at this level but we need to adapt the way we use him. He'd work better as a second striker with Rodriguez or Sharp in front of him or as the playmaker in the whole in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Lallana is not a central midfielder - he needs to play out wide or in the whole where he has a bit more space - and the space he needs to make a difference. Schneiderlin needs to step up - at the moment he takes too much time on the ball. I am sure he had the ability to do so - he just needs time to adjust. Steven Davis was OK but we are missing Jack Cork in the middle to keep the ball moving and keep possession. Dan Fox cannot defend at the level - he gives the attacking players far too much time and space. Fonte needs to keep it simple at this level. Guly slows the game down too much and loses possession far too much - and doesn't give us the width we need on the right. He is not a premier league midfielder! We need a left back who can defend, two good centre backs and a right winger at a minimum to have any chance of staying up. I would add a striker with real pace and a holding midfielder who can pass to that list We need to adapt our formation - perhaps playing 4-2-3-1 at home and maybe 4-3-3 away from home when we are going to see less of the ball.

Kelvin Davis is probably better than Rob Green - but the team is nowhere near as good as the 2003 Saints team. We crawled across the finish line last season to finish second - and that was obvious yesterday. A lot of the players who started the game should be on the substitutes bench at this level. Norwich who also had successive promotions from League 1 and the Championship like us brought ib 8 players this time last year - and now look like they are going to struggle like us. Swansea brought in 9 players last summer. So far we've brought in 3 and a reserve goalkeeper. We desperately need to add som pace to the team if nothing else. For some reason are transfer strategy seems to have gone horribly wrong this summer.

Resigned to it There is no way the team that played today will get a point against Man Utd or Arsenal

I never said I think the club is being run badly - it's been a success story for the most part for the last three years - but then I don't think everything has been run perfectly either. It's not a case of black and white - it's 50 shades of grey! The way the whole Pardew issue was handled two summers ago probably cost us the League One Title and the delay in bringing in players in January probably cost us the Championship. I suspect Cortese is still on a learning curve when it comes to transfer negotiations in the football world. And in my opinion the club got the season ticket pricing wrong this summer - and this season the home and away shirts have been a bit of mistake. They look like Liverpool shirts - not Saints shirts - and for this reason it looks like shirt sales haven't exactly been great - when for our first season back in the premier league they should have been great. I've only seen a few new shirts around - when this time last year and the year before they were all over the place. But overall the powers that be at the club have got far more right than wrong which is why we're back in the Premier League after two successive promotions.
-
I'd be amazed if we do sign more than one more player before the window slams shut - and if we do I bet it won't be a big signing. That's not to say we don't need to strengthen the squad - we do - but all I'm expecting now is a relatively unknown centre back for a relatively small fee, a failed premier league player like Dann or Berra for more money than their worth or someone on loan from another club whose been left out of the 25 man
-
I'd play 4-3-2-1 with Rodriguez leading the line, Lambert and Lallana behind him with Rickie drifting to the left and Adam to the right. Morgan, Davis and Ward-Prowse in the midfield 3 And the defence as it was today.

They seem to have forgotten they were a mid table nowhere club before the Arabs arrived - just like Chelsea before the Russians arrived. And just like Chelsea fans they've gone all big time Charlie very quickly!
-
Maybe he should have signed for us a couple of years ago when he had the chance - instead of Blackpool - we were always the bigger club and were always going to end up playing at a level or two above them - that's all I'm going to say - that and I prefer Zaha - much cooler name and goes much better with Ramirez!
-
both apparently!
-
Excited and nervous - maybe a little bit fearful. I always thought we needed to add 6 or 7 premier quality players to our squad to make the setp up and the fact we haven't done so yet worries me. But it's important to remember the transfer window is not yet shut and there is still time to bring in another 3 or 4 players. It was obvious last season that our defence was never going to make the step up - the full backs simply couldn't defend and the centre backs made too many mistakes - and far too many goals were scored from the edge of the area as they backed off attacking players far too much.
-
How about Niklas Moisander or Douglas Franco Texeira from the Eredivise - I'd be happy with either of them if not both.

From the transfer rumours site for what it's worth: Southampton have been alerted to the news that Real Madrid have made their young French defender Raphaël Varane available for loan although they will face stiff competition from a number of other clubs. Nigel Adkins is also interested in St Etienne midfielder Josuha Guilavogui while the club are eyeing a potential double deal for Rennes duo Jonathan Pitroipa and Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik. Jeremain Lens and Adam Johnson are two other names that firmly remain on Adkins' shortlist. -
How about Douglas or Niklas Moisander from the Dutch League?

Paul McCartney has become a sad parody of an ageing rock star - they might well have had Elton John play he was so cringeworthy!

If we are going to play 4-3-3 this season do we nedd a RM or RW? Surely Cork, Chaplow or Davis would play on the right of a midfield 3 and Lallana on the left with the fullbacks providing the width and then Guly or Jay Rod playing on the right of a front three with Tandanari or Lambert on the left and Sharp in the middle. With a 4-3-2-1 or a diamond midfield we wouldn't need a Right Winger either. We do still need some more pace in the team though - and at least one if not two new centrebacks

I wouldn't agree with you on Notts Forest - maybe once upon a time but not now - and that was all down to a great manager and winning things in the 70s and 80s - but not in terms of a support base Same with Sheffield Wednesday Leeds - yes for now but maybe only just Villa and Everton - same as Leeds but not by much - both are in decline -Villa on the pitch and Everton off it with massive debts -

I'd rather sign Surman or Barnetta on a free than to play on the left - he has a bit if pace and is direct but that is about it. Plus both of those can pass the ball and play in the middle. -

I think your being very optimistic about the ability of our players to step up to the Premier League - and also how soon our youth players will step into the first team. We won't be signing squad players - we will be signing players for the first 11 - if anything I can see players like Fox and Richardson becoming second choice and not starters. Shaw, Stephens and Ward-Prowse will become the squad players. We certainly need to replace either Butterfield or Richardson with a first choice right back who can defend. If we sign Jay Rodriguez I expect him to start over Sharp or Lee - and expect Barnard to be moved on - at least on loan for a season in the Championship if nothing else as he basically missed last season. Seabourne the same. -

I would expect 2 new centrebacks as Martin has gone out on loan to get games - and as he's over 21 he would count as one of the 25 - and Seabourne is unproven at Championship level let alone Premiership - plus I think he will be on his way partly because of this. I'm expecting 2 new fullbacks! I would also expect at least 1 new rightback and either Richardson or Butterfield wil leave - and 1 new left back as I suspect both Dickson and Harding will be on their way. That's on top of 1 if not 2 new strikers, 2 goalkeepers, at least 1 central midfielder and 1 winger. I think we'll see quite a few players come and go this summer. -

Naldo from Werder Bremen - 6ft 6 centre back - the Daily Mail have linked us to him, Scott Dann, Matthew Upson and Zat Knight. Not sure he fits the profile of the kind of player we are supposed to be after - a bit too old with a fairly serious recent injury. Of those 4 I'd prefer Scott Dann if truth be told -
