They had a piece on the radio about government proposals to charge people for eiderly care if they can afford it (ie sell their home / use savings). One of the arguements against, the interviewer put up was that this would reduce / eliminate any legacy that an elderly person has to pass on to their kids. Am I alone in thinking this is wrong. Why should the tax payer pay for the care of the elderly if they can afford to pay for their own, just so they can leave their kids a nice nest egg. Surely that is what he point of saving for retirement is - so that you can provide for yourself when you no longer have an income. The state should provide for those who cannot afford to do so, but for those who can?

So let's get this straight. A business who won't chip in to buy their own product for you is a c***. -

True, but you could afford to buy a house and didn't have to pay to go to uni if you were able to. -

I would hate to be eighteen now. The prospect of £45k of student debt, house prices that are simply unobtainable, and a national debt that our generation have saddled them with. -
When I was an accounts clerk, iwas sent off to audit a powder coating company. The owner had a novel way of making sure we didn't hang around too long. The office we were put in was directly above the ovens. Terrible week.

Here's a novel concept - how about the journos report the news without sensationalising it and trying to stitch up people and how about the politicians giving straight answers. Who am I kidding...journos and politician deserve each other

Just watched some of it on the news. One of the strikers was carrying a placard saying "fair pensions for all". Amen to that!!

15,000 jobs are going at Lloyds - that will teach them.... On a serious note - it looks like everyone is sharing the pain after all.

For every arrogant ***** in the private sector, I am sure you will find one in the public sector. It's not about sides though is it. The private sector employees have had a rough ride of it through not fault of their own and now the public sector is about to get a big dose of the pain. I don't rejoice in that. It's terrible. However we are where we are, recriminations and finger pointing won't change it. Taxing the banking sector to death won't actually improve things that much, even if they did stay here, except to make all of us feel a little bit better that someone got their just desserts. Is it fair that public sector workers are having their pension rights changed - nope. Is it fair that the taxpayer should support an every increasing public sector pension pot whilst struggling to save for their own - nope. Something does have to give though and we will all have to give a lot more over the next few years irrespective of which sector we are in.

Perhaps they should slip the cardiologist £10k to find something wrong which will encourage him to retire.

What the hell happened to A level maths and further maths - that was all that used to be needed. Step this and C4 that - no wonder teacher complain about the hours. -

Are exams getting easier maybe, maybe not. I couldn't say. What is easier is the ability ti achieve higher grades through coursework. I was in the first year to sit gcse and my school quickly worked out that if little johnny got a c in a piece of coursework, they would be invited back one lunchtime to retry that bit of work and eventually little johnny got a b. Exam based qualifications don't give you that chance, but then there are some very valid arguments against them as well. What I can say is the level of numeracy of young people entering our company is falling and I am not talking about calculus or matrices, they can't even work out percentages. It really is sad to see.
