Problem is it’s not an exact science when picking up oldies, some you think will be great, are pony. There’s no manager that comes close to Lawrie when it comes to picking oldies for us, yet it was disastrous at Sunderland. Fat Sam did well at Bolton following a similar approach. What made Lawrie great was mixing the youngsters in with them. Bally had to be the greatest IMO. But he certainly wasn’t afraid of personalities.

Sad news on the eve of the game. The death of ex international Paul Mariner. Despite playing for the skates he was a bloody decent bloke, I spent quite a few nights sinking pints with him during his spell with the Albany Capitals in the 80’s. Walker was superb, Kane played well, but Sterling MoTM. Fair play to Southgate, ruthless subbing the sub, but you can’t argue with what he’s done. Keeper is the only worry for me, he’s borderline Boruc, I’m not sure he’s all there.
