  1. Similar to Tokyo Saint, I once left a game on the 90th minute as we were losing 0-1 and if I dashed down to Town Quay I might just catch an earlier ferry south. Heading away from The Dell I heard a big cheer and guessed we must have scored. And the match? Well, it was probably the most significant late, late equaliser the Saints have ever scored. January 3rd 1976 FA Cup 3rd Round v Aston Villa ...
  2. And if you make it to Kyoto, try to visit Nijo jo (Nijo Castle) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nij%C5%8D_Castle and see/hear the Nightingale Floor (a medieval burglar alarm, where the floorboards are deliberately misaligned and so they squeak). And while in Kyoto you might also take in the stone garden at Ryoanji http://www.ryoanji.jp/smph/eng/ and The Golden Pavilion http://www.kyoto.travel/2009/11/kinkaku-ji-temple-golden-pavil.html. In late May it will be getting a bit warm and it is possible you won't get a good view of Mt Fuji as it could be hazy. Should you be travelling on the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto on a clear day make sure you are sitting on the right hand side of the carriage as you will have a great view of Mt Fuji (left hand side when travelling back to Tokyo). . http://mohsho.image.coocan.jp/nihondairaE02.html
  3. If you are travelling around Tokyo and intend to use the underground (chika tettsu) you will find a Passmo card very useful. http://www.pasmo.co.jp/en/ A Suica card is similar http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/suica.html Both cards are a bit like an Oyster card and although they don't offer any particular discount, either/both will save a great deal of time as you won't need to buy an individual ticket for each tube journey (and all the language problems that comes with doing so). I would strongly recommend you buying a Japan Rail Card as per Tokyo Saints instructions above (everything he says above is very sensible). However, if you don't intend to travel outside of Tokyo much by train and find the initial outlay for the train ticket as bit high, you should consider buying a Suica and Nex package on arrival at Narita Airport. This will save you a few pounds over buying both a ticket into central Tokyo and a Suica card. http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/suica-nex/ And for some advance study, here is a link for a Tokyo subway map ... http://www.tokyometro.jp/en/subwaymap/index.html Travelling around Tokyo is easy and very safe but can be tiring because of the crowds. Central Tokyo (say, the Ginza line or the Marunouchi line) during the rush hour is something everyone should experience once (and only the once). For my sins I did it every day for the best part of 20 years, but that is an other story. And for your reference, a key phrase you should know is "Biru ni hai, choudai; tomodachi ga shiharai" (Two beers, please; my friend will pay).
  4. Casey Keller. Forever remembered for that save when Matt Taylor smacked a screamer towards the top corner from close range with only a minute or so to go.
  5. Many thanks. The download worked just fine - much appreciated.
  6. My daughter has sent me a few video clips of a family event and I am trying to view them. They are all MPGs. I am using Windows Media Player on a laptop using Windows 8 and although I can hear the sound, I cannot see any picture. I suspect I have other programmes available on this laptop but Windows Media Player appears to be the default. I have no particular favourite programme - I just want one that works. I am hoping it is simply a matter of clicking on a button and everything will work fine ... Any ideas?
  7. I would add the draw away at Stamford Bridge to that.
  8. Can't be sure of the position but I can give you points. NA won a point a game but his record improved as we got used to the pace and intricacies of the Premiership. I don't think it would be asking too much for the new manager to win 1.5 points per game from the 16 matches still to play. So, 24 points, which would give us a season's total of 46. This would be a minimum requirement.
  9. OK, if Pochettino brings the above qualities, so what? Adkins is an "astitute tactician" and "excellent man manager"; Adkins brought in the lads from the youth squad. So NC would apear to have replaced a tried-and-trusted popular manager who had all the qualities NC admires and replaced him with an untested former player who speaks no English. This would appear to be a backward move. Had NC replaced NA with someone with real pedigree (and, yes, by this I mean people of the calibre of Mourinho et al) then maybe I could have understood it, but, so far, I can't for the life of me work out where there has been an improvement.
  10. I. too, thought Guly put in a good corner yesterday. Furthermore, some of the Chelsea corners, especially in the first-half were woeful, failing to beat the first defender.
  11. Try this one ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20907312 and also this ... http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/120856/widespread-criticism-of-cfk-letter
  12. I fully intend to wear a double-breasted jacket. Bear in mine, Turkish, I'm 6ft 4ins and a toff and therefore carry off such a look.
  13. I realize I'm a bit behind - but I'm currently 6,000 miles away. But despite those 6,000 miles, I can, from here, feel the glee with which you typed those words!
  14. An easy enough win for Chelsea against what appeared to be a mid-Championship team who tried hard but were outclassed. But the reason I start this thread is to comment on the support. There was a surprisingly large contingent of Chelsea fans, but despite being 0-3 down for almost all of the second half, it was the Mexican fans who were the loudest. I couldn't make out the words of their main song, but the tune was unmistakable ... OWTSGMI.
  15. Yes, I have received an email confirming my purchase. I also took a screen shot of the confirmation page. I am currently in rural Japan and purchased my ticket with amazing ease yesterday morning. I see the cup ticket will be 'delivered' to my Season Card, so I presume something clever with the database is happening in the background. It it's very definately a case of so-far-so-good, bit I shall wait until I am in the stadium and discover no-one else is sitting in my seat before I will rest at complete ease.
  16. Many thanks for these suggestions. I downloaded an email client called Thunderbird and it seems happy to allow me to configure it for a couple of pop3 accounts and all is working well. It might not be want the professionals at Microsoft are trying to achieve, but it is good enough for my modest requirements.
  17. A dear old Windows XP laptop died on me last week and so I purchased a new laptop that had Windows 8 installed - no other option was available. For email I use my own domain name but I can't for the life of me see how I can configure the Mail app thingy to use my own domain name. It started off telling me I had to have a Microsoft Account (which I don't especially want and certainly will never use). Any ideas/suggestions/recommendations on how to handle this specific problem welcomed.
  18. The fact that our average crowd in our first season in League 1 - 20,982 - was bigger than the capacity of FP - 20,688 (as given by Portsmouth City Council) - seems not to bother him/her at all. 19. Maybe the whole share purchase thingy could be re-branded into something else using multi-syllabic financial jargon - a 'non-redeemable, zero-coupon bond' might be one such suggestion.
  20. In Ward-Prowse, Shaw and Reeves we have fielded and 18 year old, a 17 year old and a 20 year old (and also Mayuka, aged 21) - and all have shown theselves to be very able and with mental maturity. Makes you proud to be a Saint.
  21. Tolerance
  22. I saw a magnificent game of footie yesterday evening. Fabrigas and Messi gave masterly displays and Deportivo made an exemplary comeback after a nightmare start. If you get the chance, see the game, highlights or simply just the goals for a real treat.
  23. I lived there from 1978 to 1994 and visit 3 or 4 times a year. I just returned from a two week visit yesterday evening. Feel free to PM me for any info you require, although the more I go there, the more I realise I do not know much about Japan. Needless-to-say, I love the place.
  24. This Fit and Proper Persons Test - who created it? The FL. Therefore only the FL can make a decision on it. Why are they batting it back to the Administrator?
