Pellè has been a very good player for us, better at times than others, but usually when he has a drought it's at least partly due to the opposition doubling up defence on him. And that creates space for the rest of our forward line even if he does nothing. But he's either scoring and effing brilliant, or not scoring and complete sh*te.

This, in spades redoubled. Players have good and bad runs, they don't suddenly become utter sh*te over the course of a few days.

We didn't pay too much for shane long. We paid as much as it took to get him from a club that didn't want to sell him. You could equally argue that the dippers overpaid us for lallana, lovren and lambert, and man u overpaid us for clyne and schneiderlin. Long has been a huge part of these couple of seasons for saints, you don't get international players for a few grand and fifty quid a week.

That's the point though, isn't it. We'd just been comprehensively raped of the core of our squad, but managed to get decent money for it. It didn't matter what we paid for Long, the price was completely irrelevant at that stage. We needed a competent match-ready premier league striker, and he fitted the bill perfectly. That's actually an excellent point. When Yoshida had a decent run as a starter he improved massively, now he's essentially a backup player he struggles. Hardly surprising really.
