I assume Nik Nak still picks the team. We were told on very good authority -from distinguished posters with impeccable ITK credentials- that we would get a foreign, relative no-mark so that it would be easier to pass on instructions etc. No egos, no conflicts of personality - just Nik Nak and Leslie doing their thing.

We have 12 points instead of 11 points. That's the only certainty. F**k knows whether we would have beaten Wigan, Newcastle and QPR. We couldn't beat Wigan at home (or Sunderland or Norwich, two other relegation rivals, for that matter). If NA had done so, he would have equaled the number of away wins he had mustered all season. Wishful thinking IMO. MP hasn't turned around a sinking ship or turned us into world beaters; but we have kicked on. And the difference is greater than the stats on paper suggest.

You overlook the fact that Adkins had a much lighter and more winnable set of fixtures.

For 7 games and an adrenalin shot to get over the line, it might just work. But as a long-term solution, its a ticking timebomb.

Agree with most of this, though I thought Cork had one of his poorer games. Tried to do much at times and conceded possession and freekicks needlessly. Not always his fault - had to collect quite a few hospital balls with his back turned to oncoming player. But he'll have much better days. Shaw definitely grew in the second half but he struggled in the first half against Moses. Thankfully Benitez switched Moses to the other wing and Shaw was much more assured against Hazard.

Clyne was my MOTM. Both defensively and offensively superb, though should have shot or crossed it earlier in the first half. Moses caused Shaw quite a few problems down in the first and was their main threat; but after Hazard came on and he was switched the right, Clyne bottled him. If Clyne could work on his crossing to put an end product to his aggressive runs, he would be some player.

Apples and pears comparison. Rickie isn't a carthorse, a physically dominant targetman. The comparison doesn't do justice to his game. Rickie has a brain and footballing awareness. Something that's hard to teach and something Carroll will never have .
