  1. Have you ever lost a loved one completely out of the blue? Who have then had disgusting lies spread about them in the national media? Before yesterday it was the cover up being exposed and all those involved in the cover up apologizing. Which has happened. The next step are the relevant people being brought to justice in the fair and proper way. Like with anyone who commits a crime. I can see where you're coming from here, this all depends on The Sun knowing how much of the info they were given by police was true and what was false. Still you can't deny that if the story they printed back then turned out to be false (and it did) there were always going to be dire consequences and they knew it. If we take Heysel out of the equation (where they were at fault and some Liverpool fans were jailed) the report has widely found that the Liverpool crowd behaved no differently to any 'normal' relatively well behaved football crowd. A crowd which naturally put their faith into being policed into the stadium safely and quickly, and I'm making the understatement of the year when I say they were badly let down. Large crowds are always disorganised and are potentially dangerous, it's the nature of the beast. It's why they have to be policed in the first place.
  2. http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_fatal_accidents Watkins was appointed medical delegate in '78 and you only have to look at the amount of fatal accidents before and after this year to see what an impact he had on improving safety in Formula 1. He wasn't the only one, others like Jackie Stewart were campaigning as well but apart from the driver's lives he did save at the trackside, there's no knowing how many lives he's ultimately saved as a result of his actions over the years. Drivers that have had enormous crashes in relatively modern Formula 1 cars and lived/walked away owe their lives to him as well I'd suspect. A huge force behind dragging F1 from its dark days of the '70s into this ultra safe era. RIP Sid.
  3. As someone who served in the Met during the 80s/most of the 90s you really couldn't be any wider of the mark
  4. When you have a crowd of that size it's the nature of the beast. It is why a gathering of hundreds/thousands of people need to be policed in the first place. As an ex-copper who did some crowd control in the 80s I'm afraid your take on how crowds move and function is naive to say the least. You'd be surprised at how few people it takes to push and shove to create a "surge", and the whole lot moves forward. Besides how did the fans who were let in through the gate and into the dark narrow tunnel know that the pens in front of them were already beyond their safety limit? They didn't. Those fans put their faith into the police to lead them into the stadium as safely and as quickly as possible and all the police did was open the gate, pray and hope it would all sort itself out. But it didn't, and they let 3000 people enter a space designed for 1600 people max and we all know what the consequences were. Basic police crowd control procedures would have at the very minimum significantly reduced the crush. The fact is these procedures simply weren't in place.
  5. Spot on
  6. You are right but there are other factors. The stadium (like many others back then) was hopelessly outdated even for those times and could in no way cope with crowd sizes of FA cup SF crowds in a safe manner. Also 'Health and safety' as we know it barely existed back then, it was just starting to come in but you still get away with largely ignoring it and continue to run whatever you were running. For instance the safety barriers didn't even meet the safety standards back then, yet they were still holding FA Cup semi finals at the stadium. That's how lax it was back then. But there were numerous failures to do even basic crowd control procedures on the day by the police. The most notable one being the absence of any stewards/policemen by the entrance of pens 3 or 4 to direct the onrushing fans away from the full pens. Back then this was BASIC procedure. Even if the crowd had all arrived on time and walked calmly into the stadium there would have been problems. Nowhere near the deaths/injuries that occurred but at the end of the days thousands of fans were left to their own devices all trying to get to the same place, completely unsupervised in a barrier-restricted area. Regardless of how well behaved the fans were/police attitudes it was a recipe for disaster. Hillsborough was caused by a operational cock up of monumental proportions by the police, which quickly developed into a complete shambles. Exacerbated in those times with outdated stadiums and ever-increasing football crowds, where some of the stadiums had become logistical death-traps. Let's not forget the 56 people who died at the Valley Parade fire in '85 was caused by one person dropping a lit cigarette.
  7. oh god they've got Andy Awful commentating on Solent again
  8. Anyone hear about Esther Vergeer who won the wheelchair tennis? In singles, she has not been beaten since January 2003 and is on a winning streak of 470 matches, with an overall pro record of 687-25. She has been the world number one since 1999. That's what you call total domination.
  9. He came on when Man U were camped in our half and was having to chase aimless hoofs and barely got a touch of the ball. There was one opportunity where he got the ball to feet, and he surged at two Man U players before one of them brought him down cynically to win us an attacking free kick. I watched him throughout the African Cup of Nations earlier this year and throughout the tournament he was pure class.
  10. I know exactly what you mean, I stopped supporting the England team 10-12 years ago when it became a money fuelled 'brand' and national pride went out the window. If the Moldovans got a result I would find it rather amusing. In other news it's Kazakhstan 1-0 Republic Of Ireland at half time, WTF is going on there?
  11. If fit I think Yoshida should play against Arsenal personally, as it is the home game against Villa which is the must win game to get our season going. Anything against Arsenal will be a bonus so we've not got much to lose with giving him a try out. If he's excellent he keeps his place, if he is poor we play Fonte vs Villa. from what I've heard I think he'll be a good signing. He was part of a Japanese olympic team that kept 4 consecutive clean sheets in the olympics, one of them against Spain in which Jordi Alba and Juan Mata started.
  12. The game vs Everton in our relegation season when Marcus Bent scored late on. That one goal just killed everything - the fans, the coaching staff, it was absolutely horrible after that game.
  13. Unfortunately insurance gets more expensive every year. It's down to a combination of things - the compensation culture, cars getting more expensive etc.etc. Your NCB will take it down so far, it'll then level out and it'll become increasingly harder to get it cheaper. But just by haggling and not accepting the automated renewal I've easily saved a 4 figure sum over the years, and I seem to be saving an ever increasing amount each year in these times.
  14. I wonder how much of that is down to being 38 and not being able to find a club that'll pay him
  15. I second the TPS - automated sales calls stopped instantly after I registered
  16. Then you are driving too nice/expensive a car or you're with the wrong insurance company. My mate's lad turned 25 just before his insurance was due for renewal. Now he may only drive a Nissan Micra but he is paying £360 fully comp and he's only got 4 years NCB. (I think he's with Admiral) For the last two years he's received his insurance renewal, done a bit of research on price comparison sites, rung up Admiral to tell he can get them a better deal elsewhere and they've immediately knocked 15-20% off his quoted renewal price. 2 years ago they knocked £90 off and halved his voluntary excess PURELY because he rang them up and politely haggled. He reckons they deliberately jack the prices up 15-20% in the hope people won't ring up to save the hassle or because they are otherwise too busy with their lives. Whatever you do though DON'T JUST ACCEPT THE RENEWAL PRICE. RING THEM UP AND HAGGLE. It is amazing what you can save.
  17. Hooiveld has given away 2 penalties and yet Fonte has had the most criticism. Why? Because Fonte looks to be the weaker of the two players at this level. Since Hooiveld joined I've always thought he was the better player. Sure there are many bandwagon jumpers when it comes to scapegoats but there isn't smoke without fire. We have conceded 8 goals in 3 games but half of those have come when the best two teams in the country have lay siege to our goal and put our defence under extreme pressure with world class players. Our defence has never experienced that before. Davis' distribution simply has to improve and has directly contributed to needlessly putting more pressure on our defence. If it carries on we'll start conceding goals we cannot afford to concede and NA will have to look at dropping Davis in January. If we consistently perform at the level we've played against the two Manchester's all season we'll stay up no problem. So we know we are capable of staying up. We also have Ramirez and Yoshida to come into the side yet. Ramirez is a bit of an unknown to me but I gather Yoshida is a leader. He captained the Japanese side to the semis of the Olympics and until their 3-1 defeat to Mexico the Japanese hadn't even conceded a goal in their 4 previous games (and one of those games was against Spain) Results will come.
  18. K Davis - 6 - Pulled off some good saves but his shocking distribution nearly gifted Man U two goals on its own Clyne - 7 - Thought he was very good apart from the slip Hooiveld - 7 - Silly penalty to give away but excellent otherwise Fonte - 5 - Ok until we 2-1 up and then started to panic Fox - 5 - Mediocre Schneiderlin - 9 - Absolutely superb and got a thoroughly deserved goal. Great composure and finish. S Davis - 8 - Excellent, worked very hard and stopped them playing for large periods Ward-Prowse - 8 - See Davis, this lad looks a real prospect Lallana - 7 - Some good touches and linked up well Puncheon - 9 - Regularly made good runs and was a real threat, one of the best performances I've seen from him in a Saints shirt Lambert - 10 - Made Vidic look like a non-league player all game, should never have been taken off (Rodriguez - 78' ) - 5 - got forward well, a little naive defensively (Mayuka - 74') - 6 - largely ineffective but made one good run that won us an attacking free kick (Guly - 75' ) - 4 - I've defended him previously but unimpressed, would have preferred a knackered Lambert to stay on Adkins - 6 - Been more of a match for both Mancini and Fergie tactically, but got the subs all wrong
  19. Grosjean banned from the next race for causing the pile up at turn 1
  20. Bush was a tyrant and Blair was an incredibly weak leader so did what Bush did. They should stand trial but sadly it'll never happen
  21. How old are you?
  22. Webber has to take a 5 place grid drop
  23. But arguably he was. Having watched the AFCON throughout Mayuka and Chris Katongo were the two best players in the tournament for me, and were key to Zambia going all the way. Now I've raved about Katongo for years but having seen Mayuka for the first time he looks a real prospect. He has pace, is deceptively strong, has a good touch, wonderful agility and most importantly the lad can finish. If he can reproduce his AFCON form for us he could be a massive player for us. I'm delighted he's signed for us.
  24. Portsmouth have signed former Sheffield United midfielder Johnny Ertl on a one-month contract.
  25. Sam Magri has signed for QPR according to Solent
