With respect to your Father I know my Father would have disagreed a tad as his RN ship was certainly a target during his time on those convoys. He also was a target on the North Atlantic so much so that two RN ships were sunk whilst he was aboard. Oh yes and he did one Malta convoy which also was attacked. Took me years and years to get even that info from him as he refused to talk about the War.
