I seem to recall NC and ML paid off a load of the debts left to local businesses from his last reign. BTW, I did meet him over the summer. Only for a brief exchange of words, however.

Hmm one thing about the Germanic mentality should be considered here - when they want to sell something, they come up with their own valuation (usually astronomically high) and wont budge from it, despite a contradictory consentual valuation (lower). Buying a used car in Austria and Germany is crazy; none of that "drive a new car off the forecourt and lose the VAT immediately" notion here. I've seen 2 year old cars (near end of warranty) with 30,000-40,000 km on the clock being sold for 2 grand under the new price.
