It's easy to knock countries, especially the one you live in. But really, I think we are quite lucky. Britain is pretty great, it has its flaws and faults, but there are much, much worse places to be really. I say Britain deliberately, as I'd be sad to see it broken up, though I do believe if the Scots choose independence then they should be allowed it. I don't wish to open another angry exchange with you papster. I guess I'm more jut thinking aloud. Do you not think that jobs/economies/industries/'sectors' in a country change over time? It's pretty clear how you feel about the mines, and your feelings toward MT on that, fair enough. But, at some point, that change probably would have happened. Economies are constantly adapting and changing, we as a country have to change and adapt with that, or risk falling behind, especially to developing countries, with less entrenched industries and vested interests, that can slow down change or progression as they fear change. I totally agree though, governments Red & Blue, have failed to adapt and keep a finger on the pulse as it were. We have discussed my troubles in coming to the 'job market', as it were, and I'm going to spend a lot of time paying off that £20k debt I amassed, on top of all the interest that has accrued. Despite that, I can only see things getting worse in the short-medium term with student debts set to double further still! My other half qualified as a doctor last year, and has in excess of £30k debt, at £9k per year tution and rising cost of living - it's easy to see the amount of debt for student doctors getting on for £50k. That's a scary thought.

Very well thought of up there too I'm told. On Chappers, I feel for the bloke. Hasn't been a great season for him. He's a likeable character, that gives everything for the cause. I'd be surprised if he was still here next season, I think we are looking to move to a level that is above him. I think he probably is a Championship level player (nowt wrong with that - I'd kill to be a footballer at that level! It's a fantastically exciting league). Hope he recovers quickly, and fully. If he does move on, I will certainly be wishing him all the best.

I don't know what it says about me that I love bizarre music, but this is absolutely bats hit mental and I bloody love it for that reason. Also love how the crowd have no idea how to take it

Mate it's an absolute joke. They are so out of touch it is untrue. Total rip-off. Hyde Park is so poor for gigs as well. They have to have it so quiet otherwise all the rick folk in the area throw their toys out of the pram. On the topic of gigs, I won tickets (again - I bloody love twitter) to see Palma Violets again (6th time in 2013 - I'm not a stalker, honest) on Tuesday. It was in Brixton, where they are from, and they had their mates Childhood supporting, who are also local. Fantastic gig, by far the best I have ever seen PV. Tore the place apart, helped how up for it the crowd were, I left feeling like I'd been beaten up! Childhood are definitely one to keep an eye out for, had a really great sound. Could see them being a fantastic festival act. Yesterday was a struggle. Uff.

I keep seeing it pop up on twitter that Harold Wilson closed more pits than Thatcher. Is this true? If so, why is he not attacked so vociferously by the left as those on the right? I'm trying to track down the figures. Sorry if it has already been mentioned on here, I have a horrific hangover, and haven't really been keeping up with this thread today.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't doubting you or anything. As I said, genuinely curious.
-
Don't take this the wrong way. I'm genuinely curious, how do you know this? Is this definitely the case?

Summer 2013 HCDAJFU / Transfer thread

Terrifying to think how could Arshavin could have been if he actually gave a stuff. Great player, poor attitude. -
Morgan for me. Not only one of our stand out performers, but in my opinion one of the leagues stand out performers this season. This stats back this up. Not taking anything from Rickie & Cork, who I also think have been brilliant, but Morgan tops it for me. Special mention for him upping his goal haul too. Shaw YPOY by a country mile. The strength, composure & dynamism shown for a 17 y/o is staggering. Clyne has been fantastic too - £2m for him is an absolute bargain. Mention too for JWP, some good glimpses, especially being throw in against some heavyweight opponents. Shown enough to suggest he can have a bright future, I hope he continues to develop with us, and moves onto the be a first XI regular.

 Am I reading this right? Bazza & Papster in agreement?
-
Not the most scientific of things, and yes it is a journo on Twitter, but he seems quite respectable. Quite surprising if true. Janan Ganesh @JananGanesh ICM poll finds 50% think Thatcher was good for Britain. 34% say not. Sorry, but in electoral terms that is called a landslide.

Errrm I never said pap doesn't know anything. I said it as a reaction to being told, yet again, I don't know anything. I over-reacted, have stated I regret it, and taken it down and apologised. I also sent PM's to those in the conversation, apologising and explaining myself. What are you actually trying to achieve? What more do you want? This thread is not about me. It's about Margaret Thatcher. Let's keep it like that, she is infinitely more interesting than whether or not I told porkies on the interwebs.
-
Half of, or at least a significant proportion of Billy Braggs songs must be about, or at least referencing Thatcher. Some great stuff there. Even if I don't always agree with him.
-
Fair enough mate. In my defence, i have written a number of things that have been published since I was 16. Short stories, poems (haha girly blah blah blah), blogs, articles (journalistic/academic). I don't keep a copy of every one to hand to prove myself right on an internet forum. You can choose to not believe me if you want. Understandable, I probably wouldn't either. I'm also not hugely keen on giving away my personal information on here. Such as my full name, which is clearly visible on the article. I've apologised, and retracted the statement. Let's move on.
-
I've already said I regret even mentioning this. Let's forget it. I don't wish to go giving stuff about myself out. This thread is about a dead lady, not me. Let's just move on.
-
Wasn't there a fact along the lines of "no team has conceded 28 goals in the first ten games and stayed up", or something similar - I probably have the exact numbers wrong.
-
Hey, I'm far from perfect mate. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. We're all human. We all get things wrong from time to time.
-
I really haven't. Well, not at the moment. My laptop has died, and me being the technological fool I am have also managed to break my external hard-drive. I'm also not entirely sure if I am allowed to share, as it's probably property of the uni/journal. I'm aware how shady this sounds, I probably wouldn't believe me either right now. I do admit I regret mentioning it. I'm just fed up of constantly being told I don't know anything.
-
It was through the uni. I don't have it to hand. But could probably track it down. It would require a subscription to be read, which often costs £000's. They are more for use in universities etc. It's pretty dull, mostly just historic facts. If you still really want to read it, I'll see what I can do.
-
Ok, I worded that poorly. I'll accept that. I of course know that there is more to it than just plantation at the turn of the century, and the following sturggles. But in fairness, you have also skipped over certain things too. Wow, I didn't realise quite how successful and 100% state owned they were. However, this is still just one example. How many other cases are there of Governments, especially in this country making a balls up of providing services, and wasting millions/billions of tax payer money?.
-
You disagreeing? You don't know anything.
-
Ermmm, no I didn't. I think of myself as a decent enough writer. But, fitting an entire history of the trouble in Ireland, into a post probably 100 or so words, is a tall order. Even for me. I at no point said the history was the sole reason. Get a grip. And learn to deal with people with different opinions to you. The world doesn't think the same as you, and it's not a bad thing. Everyone who has a different opinion to you is not clueless, as you seem to try and make out at every single juncture. Also, don't be so patronising. A GCSE and an academic journal aren't quite the same thing, are they?
-
This thread isn't about me, I regret even posting this.
-
You can have empathy with the situation of the Irish, some awful things have happened to the Irish people. But to kill, or condone the killing of innocent people, for things the politicians/leaders from the times of their parents/grandparents is evil. If the black community rose up now, in reaction to slavery, and enslaved the white community, would that be right? Or would that e evil?
