At present I think that the UK Government is positioning itself to keep an open border, knowing that this is unacceptable to the EU, and in the expectation that those nasty Europeans would then be forced to implement border checks, and therefore be responsible for any problems arising.

The United Kingdom and the Death of Boris Johnson as we know it.

If Parliament agrees to an election based on a certain date, it is feasible that the PM then advises the Queen to proclaim the election for a different date, which is why the opposition are avoiding it at the moment. In theory Boris could set the date to after Oct 31st, and with parliament dissolved we would leave on "no deal" by default. https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainers/prime-ministers-powers-over-election-date -

Hypo, if you were being lined up against Corbyn, I am sure you would poll quite highly. -

Well, he has got a rescue dog. -
For his birthday, my wife arranged for our youngest to have a "lesson" on a fully operational 737-800 simulator this morning. Sitting as 'passengers' we could watch everything and all the instruments as the instructor assisted him through taking off from East Midlands, a touch and go landing at Liverpool, ( that is down and straight up again without stopping, not a dodgy one ), then landing at Blackpool. Gives you a bit of an insight into how things operate in commercial cockpits, especially where the automated functions kick in, ( ie watching the trim wheels spinning, mechanisms that are indirectly linked to the issues with the Max8 ).

Oi ! Spuds, if you don't mind.

Possibly, but both my brother and I went to Uni, ( me to Wales, him to Cambridge ), so our parents seemed happy. It was bit strange being referred to as 'senior' and my brother 'junior', and having teachers who had been at the school with our father, and indeed one who had taught, ( and remembered ), him.

Same one I did, but I paid attention.

Careful, John Bercow is Jewish, you aren't suggesting anything unsavoury are you ?

Being impartial and holding an opinion can be mutually exclusive. ( Unless you are a Premier League referee ).

But, he is a Conservative.

Given how clever Cummings and co think they are, could they not have foreseen this?

I was asking how BoJo would excuse it, given he promised it "do or die".

Led by Donkeys have projected Boris' s "We are going to make a Titanic success of Brexit" quote onto the side of the Titanic museum in Belfast.

Assuming we get beyond Oct 31st it will be interesting to see how " do or die" is excused. However, let's not get complacent over Boris's capabilities or his political future. The Tories are still the largest party in Parliament, Labour only look organised when viewed in the light of the Conservatives, and FPTP allied to constituency boundaries tends to favour the Tories in England. The next election will be a single issue poll, ( an issue on which Labour is completely muddled ), and this is a very poor basis for electing what in theory is the Government for the next 5 years, and it is possible that the general discontent with the political class would lead to a low turnout, which I suspect would also favour the Tories. He won't be bog snorkelling just yet.

[h=2]Here's one for GM; "The pound soars to a one-week high after Remainer MPs forced Boris Johnson to seek a further Brexit delay if he cannot agree a deal with Europe"[/h] "...UBS analysts said a delay to Brexit until January 2020 and an election after October could push the pound as far as $1.30, a four-month high." https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7430969/The-pound-soars-one-week-high-possible-Brexit-delay.html

And with the prorogation there would probably not be enough time to pass it . That's assuming enough of the 'simple' are around to provide majority, given we have a minority government.
