The story suggests that the board see Steve Bruce as "the English option". Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we agreed to have at least one Englishman on the shortlist and all things considered I think Bruce is probably the best of the bunch at the moment.

I think Koeman will outshine any other realistic candidate. Steve Bruce is a good manager with an image problem that we'd struggle to handle if we appointed him.

That's a cracking interview. I think getting into the French team would have been a huge part of any decision he might take to stay or leave. Delighted he's got there playing for us and I hope it continues.

The Daily Mirror linked Javier Hernandez to us, Inter and Valencia. If it is a part-exchange for Shaw, as reported, could we be playing for time so that we don't announce the sale before the new manager? EDIT: Sorry, misread the bit about the World Cup. Hernandez is, of course, there with Mexico. That rules him out then I can't see that being anything other than agent talk. Even if Schneiderlin and Wanyama were to leave (unlikely) we wouldn't have any business with a 31-year-old lower midtable CM.

Besides, with a new manager coming in the players will be on top of their game to make sure they impress when they come back.

"Moyes said that he believes his destiny lies in managing a Champions League team and that he has turned down offers to return to the game at a lower level."

You have just been appointed Southamptons new manager

I'd poo myself. Can I appoint Koeman as my assistant and bail after two games? -
Doesn't mean we've appointed him - just that RK wants the job.

Chambers v Shaw - am I deluding myself...
DuncanRG replied to Legod Second Coming's topic in The Saints
I think Chambers was much better than Shaw in the first half of the season but Luke got a massive lift after the England cap and stepped it up in the last few months. Considering his potential at centre back I'd be more upset losing Chambers than Shaw. -
Normally works fine after some bridge building. Players realise they need to keep performing or they'll never get a move. If Suarez can come back stronger, Lallana can. Most are more professional than that - Ronaldo and Bale both stayed for an extra season before moving and played out of their skins. It's more about the dressing room dynamics for us if Lallana stays. I'm not sure he could realistically hold onto the captaincy. I'm struggling to think of many examples of players not getting on with it at this level.

Hernandez doesn't have much pace, so it's not really in behind most of the time. Though I suppose it's easy to see it that way when United dominate the ball, aren't pressed back and only bring him on for 20 minutes at the end when they need a goal. Not sure he would suit being the main (and lone) striker here, and he certainly won't come here to play the same role as he does now at United. It does look like the standard hoovering of old journeymen. Promoted clubs are always linked with players like that, though.

Nothing new, just 'Reed said there were no bids but Lambert and Pochettino have gone'

Yeah I know, obviously it'll never happen but it answers your question! God, imagine... Borini is a decent shout as well but it looks like Liverpool want to hold onto him.

£2m if he demands the number 9 shirt off Iago Aspas as a permanent tribute to Jay Rodriguez

Not the same pressure to get the move done. Shaw knows that he will move to a big club sooner or later and has plenty of years ahead of him. This might be Lallana's only chance to play in the Champions League and, if Liverpool are serious about moving on if it's not concluded quickly, time is of the essence for him. Adam may reasonably feel he's paid his dues at the club as well, when Luke obviously hasn't had time to. Luke may want to go but not like Adam does, and I can understand that.

£3m if he wins the Johnstone's Paint Trophy again

Not nice to see, but I wouldn't want to turn down a kid who's just looking for an autograph.

I think we'll live!

There's no reason to mention us when he's directly asked about Liverpool, to be fair

Is his Chinese mate coming with a chequebook?

Yeah. Add-ons for winning trophies seem quite common but if that's all that would bring the fee close to our valuation it's a no-go. Maybe it's even more ludicrous than that - winning the World Cup? Doing a Bale and scoring in the CL final? Trademarking his own celebration gesture?
