http://www.cricinfo.com/rsaveng09/content/current/story/443574.html South Africa have had to shelve plans to assess their spin-bowling options after they were forced to withdraw Imran Tahir from the squad for the final Test against England. Tahir, the Pakistan-born legspinner, was thought to have qualified for South Africa last April, but issues have arisen around his residency situation and it's unclear when, or if, he will be able to start an international career. It is a messy affair for Cricket South Africa, who have been caught unawares by the latest development. There is even uncertainty over whether Tahir, who is married to a Durban woman, has spent enough time in South Africa over the last four years, or whether the problem stems from him not having a local passport. "To be honest, I'm not 100% sure," Mickey Arthur, South Africa's coach, said. "I think it's something with Home Affairs and hopefully we will get some clarity on it over the next couple of days." Although he was named in the 15-man squad for the Wanderers, Arthur said that Tahir had not been in line for a debut at the Wanderers, even before this situation arose. However, the management were keen to watch him ahead of the India tour next month, and haven't given up hope of being able to include him on that trip. "We had him mind for down the line, we feel we need an attacking spinner because we go to India, then West Indies," Arthur said. "He was the guy we had our eye on. I'm sure we can try and get something sorted at Home Affairs but he certainly wasn't available for this Test. We included him to have a look at him and to see if he fits the bill." Although Tahir is now out of the frame for the immediate future, his original selection shows South Africa aren't convinced by their current spinning options. Paul Harris began the series with a five-wicket haul at Centurion, but has gone steadily downhill to the extent that he was outbowled by JP Duminy in the second innings at Newlands. Mike Procter, the convenor of selectors, voiced his concerns to Cricinfo a few days ago. "It is a little disappointing when your frontline spinner wasn't able to extract more on a wicket that turned." Arthur said that Tahir's call-up would have been a chance to see the spinner at close quarters. "It would have been exploratory. When we brought him in we certainly weren't thinking of him playing here, it was a case of seeing what made him tick, getting to know him a little and having a look at him in training just to convince me in my mind that he has what it takes. Unfortunately that's probably not the case now, but we'll see how it pans out." The other problem for Tahir at the moment is a lack of first-class cricket, having fallen out of favour with the Titans, who have identified a future legspinning prospect in the 23-year-old Shaun von Berg. Though Tahir is set to move to the Durban-based Dolphins franchise for next season, he has had to rely on the amateur three-day competition to keep him in action of late. "He's still bowling, getting five-fors and ten-fors each week," Arthur said. "I'm not entirely sure what the issues are between him and the Titans, but the Titans obviously aren't going to pick him because they'd rather pick the young leggie they have. We'll play Imran Tahir by ear." Andrew McGlashan is assistant editor of Cricinfo

KP's form would suggest he will have to come back to county cricket to regain the same before the English Test Match season. We might have him back for the opening of the season. -
Ward was a high earner. He was not featuring in Coventry's team, he was out form and was a risk. Our new owner has always said we must try to live within the division means but strengthen when required/necessary. We did that with Fonte. We cannot afford a high earner risk when we can go with an up and coming low earning risk who is getting regular football. I go with the club on this one. Let's make sure we have a balanced wage bill and a club that continues to run with some financial prudence. Let us then use that financial health to push on when we need to in the CCC. This year is still a consolidation and that has to mean getting rid of the high earners not featuring regularly and not inflate the wage bill more. I think this decision sends out the right message

It was not donated.

Not sure the Ward deal "fell through" I suspect Pardew realised it might be a risk (why 18 months deal?) and when he got back from Spain he pulled the plug and followed the Seabourne deal instead. Just a hunch, no knowledge on this one
-
Gift it to Doncaster as a gesture for them giving us Brian Stock?
-
Well said Frank. I hope you are right as well
-
Doubt he is with Saints in Spain or it would have been announced bearing in mind he is still under contract with CP. Anyway Stock looks the better shout at the moment coming from reliable sources on here

Good points.

James is not a right back. He lacks pace, awareness, positional play and experience. As a midfielder he is ok but will be found out at the next level. Pardew seems to like him presumably because he can cross the ball (from the wrong places imo) May be a good utility player to cover for injuries but no more than that at present. Murty is our best RB. Might lack a bit of pace now but has everything else to compensate. Thomas would be my second choice although he is better in the centre

Pardew on 'player not doing so well elsewhere...'
Weston Saint replied to Fergie's topic in The Saints
We might be able to sign players from the CCC with Premier capabilities but unlikely to make enquiries for any players already signed for Premier sides. That will come when we are in the CCC. Would think the player is Elliott Ward who did not even make the bench for Coventry yesterday and Coventry have already confirmed on Friday we have made an approach but no firm bid at that stage. -
Lallana wants to play for Saints. He is happy here and learning a lot from Lambert and Connolly The club are showing intent as promised Pardew confirmed no offer for any of our players so far Lallana is not aware of any approach Lallana's agent has received no approaches - there is little money out there for a type of player like Lallana still proving his ability Never say never but 99% certain he will still be here when the transfer window closes.

Liebherr has absolute trust in Cortese
-
Quote from source (don't ask) Apparently, Cortese is a tyrant who makes the dreaded Andy Oldknow look like Mother Teresa, and that's shown by the number of departures from the club, including Oldknow himself, who was sacked by Cortese. Appears a man who is not going to be derailed from his course.
