The current fashion of appointing a head coach rather than a manager is the cause of such malaise. On the whole they are not man managers, leaving the players rudderless. They also have little or no control over signings. Add to that the fact we have no real leadership on the pitch and you have much of the real reasons we are in our current situation.

I saw the Macclesfield game earlier and it was clear from the start that they had a determination about them. I have no idea whether or not it's down to management, coaching or something else. They were inspired by the lad Dawson who,apart from goal scoring and defending, was a leader on the pitch. Something we lacked yesterday and for some time before that. Sign him up.

There was a story around Strachans pre-season that the players had T shirts printed saying that they survived it. By his own admission, he was adamant that players mental fitness depended on their physical fitness.

He has been consistently poor as a defender, leaving acres of space unmarshalled and drifting into the centre. Going forward, a different prospect altogether.
