Hyde and Seek Posted 18 July, 2009 Share Posted 18 July, 2009 Does anyone believe that we need an outfield player who Pardew needs to install as a leader on the pitch. For several years IMHO we have been lacking a player who can inspire on the pitch particularly when we are losing on a typical wet and windy day when we need to push on rather than accept our fate. It has been a major problem at Southampton for many a year. So WCDAJFU at this level? Where is Jimmy Case No 2.

revolution saint Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 I'd agree that we need someone to really stamp their authority on a game as captain. Personally I don't think it should be anyone already at the club though. Hopefully Pardew can bring someone in to do the kind of role Wotton was brought in for. No ideas really but off the top of my head maybe someone like Matty Holland?
eelpie Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 The difficulty in having a keeper as captain is that he can organise the defence but is not on the spot to rally the troops midfield and up front. I've often wondered if there was a role for a 'sub-captain' to organise the front half of the team. Probably a daft idea. But, yes, we need a commanding figure in the centre of the team imo. Dicko Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Historically, the best or most influential captains have been centre backs or central midfielders

Not if the defense has other ideas.... If it's between KD and Murty, they have to sort it out. There were a couple of appalling moments yesterday when either KD wasn't calling or Murty wasn't listening, esp one particular Matrix Moment in the first half when they all just stopped and stared at each other, and then the Ajax forward, and then the ball. I felt like I was watching the nipper's team and automatically shouted, "Call for it!" to the entire defense. But, hey, that's what pre-season's for. I think that KD's stock is really high because of the way he's behaved over the last year - AP would do well to capitalise on that. But if there were someone who could keep things organised at the front, esp if we have youngsters on the wing, that would indeed be helpful. Andy_Porter Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 We need 11 captains out there, the armband really doesn't mean much imo.
Saint Charlie Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Davis (and Murty, Thomas etc) will lead anyway. I would make Simon Gillett the captain. Been at the club for ages, wholehearted player, would be ideal. Could bring out the best in him with the extra responsibility.
Badger Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Agree that an outfield player would be better as captain. However I don't see too much leadership quality in our current squad so it night have to be someone bought in.Ideal candidate for me would be Matt Oakley, which may not be as unrealistic as it first seems. Colinjb Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 From the sounds of it Murty could be an ideal choice. An experienced hand who can support the manager. Jason Dodd mark 2 basically.
Clifford Nelson Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 The ideal captain of this club is not here yet. Maybe AP can recruit one.

RedAndWhite91 Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 From the Cheltenham match I only saw two players who could potentially be contenders for captaincy: Wayne Thomas and Graeme Murty. Both were solid and vocal, two attributes any captain needs. I do feel Pardew needs to bring in new players, and a captain in these new additions would be ideal. Fitzhugh Fella Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Thomas runs for cover at the first sign of trouble or feigns injury. No way a captain. One area we need to splash a little cash on imo. Buy a talismanic player, pay him decent money plus and make him capt. A James Beattie type who doesn't mind dropping a division for a year and who would lead from the front. Rasiak-9- Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 I agree, the goalkeeper can marshall his back four kinda but can never really give a proper captain's influence on the game. We really do need an outfield skipper, preferably a central-midfielder. I would suggest Wotton but yno, what with him being totally **** n all... I have watched moments like this between KD and his defence before. They are like watching a slow motion horror story being enacted in front of you. It is definitely a lack of communication and yesterday is not the only time its happened by any means and its needs sorting with Kelvin and his backs getting their acts together
RobM Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 We need 11 captains out there, the armband really doesn't mean much imo. This was my initial reaction reading this thread. We shouldn't be looking for one captain, we should be looking for a number of leaders who will naturally lead the team and help motivate and support the rest of the team, simply because it's in their nature to do so. Having 11 of them might be too far, as no doubt differences of opinion will occur, but we certainly need more than one. KD should keep the captains armband IMO, he deserves it, has earned it and should only lose it when he does something to warrant that. Also a captains involvement and leadership is just as important off the pitch as it is on, especially in a difficult season with young players. Last season the defensive lineup changed a few times, which makes it hard to build good relationships.
Jonnyboy Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Is it just me or are we filling up with retired Captains from other clubs... Murty, Thomas, Perry?, Wotton, Euell?, Davis... You'd think we'd have no problem with Leaders
