Jesus, from some of these pictures, away support in Italy and Spain really is ****ing ****e.

Spain & Italy are bigger/longer countries tho. The away support in Italy used to be very good until the authorities brought in all the laws to try & stop all the violence but which also makes it a pain in the ar*e to go to a game as an away supporter. The bigger teams still have good away support tho, i went to Roma-Juve in March and juve had 5k fans in Rome which is pretty good considering Turin to Rome is a good 5/6 hour journey.

To be fair to Malaga fans, they had alot more than that.....

Although, when I watch Toulouse not many teams bring numbers away, PSG always take a good following and Bordeaux bring a few for 'Le Derby'

Malaga to Madrid is also quite a way tbf!

Due to the number of ex-Pats following them, they have a very good away following. The fans tend to fly to away games, hence why they do get good numbers (by Spanish standards, so around 1000) for games in Madrid, Barcelona and the Islands (They take numbers to Tenerife and Las Palmas).

Hi Saints is the South!

Let me know if you ever go to Turin again as I'm not toooo far from there.. I can't get too interested in italian football, although I do play womens' footie here, which is a bit more professional than Hants League..

As a kid I lived in Rome, so I probably consider myself more a Romanista, but if I went to a game I'd have to wear a Saints shirt!

Seriously - anyone get any photos of Steau's ground? my camera died in the rain!

Silly boy, cameras only die from Al K'hol. And who was it posting about late night forum posts... (went out for 6 but then it started p***ing down so stayed in the bars)....

Seriously!

That day cost me a damned good Olympus point and shoot (analogue camera) AND my mobile phone. Let's face it, before that day what Dubai resident would ever have thought about buying Gortex?

Heck, even my flag came back cleaner than when it went out.

And no, not been out tonight, been watching House all evening and recovering from the horror of EoA finding a TimeOut & Hello Mag shoot and posting it on the Forum match thread

He is in Soooo much trouble

Porto vs Benfica, March 2008, I was sat (or should I say stood, not sure I actually had a chance to sit at any point) in the Ultras end via some contacts in Portugal, it was bit scary at times! Brilliant atmosphere though!

i went to the Jose Avalarde stadium back in March to see a Sporting game in Lisbon..

was a fantastic experience

Feb 2007, managed to get the company to pay for me to take clients to Barcelona for a conference. The centrepiece was that we all got to watch Barca v Real, Messi scoring the equaliser after Barca were reduced to 10 men. Sat at the back at the bottom tand so not great view of the stadium and cannot find the photos but in the words of Frankie Valley - Oh what a night

seems to be in Spanish for some reason

Best football match I've seen since Saints used to be a football club

I have to say, I do like reading these threads.

I was considering following Malaga whilst I was over here but the nearest club is UD Marbella so I will prob buy an ST there for next season.

But of course, however much it pains me, my true love is still SFC.

Didn't Carl Cort have a little stint down there once?

He did.

They've got Tommy Mooney at the moment, but he only played 3 games last year. They've got another two young english lads on the books I believe, understandable, there is a sizeable ex-pat community. One of the youngsters who goes to Aloha College is also going on trial with Fulham... can't remember his heritage though, think he might be Scandanavian.

Just missed out on promotion to Liga Adelante last year, lost in the playoffs. Know that feeling oh too well! Looking forward to prospective trips to Spanish Morrocco again though this year. :D

CL, I'm a footie fan living in Italy. I could support Torino or Juve, but really, after Saints it wouldn't seem right.. Marbella would just be a quick ****, now let's be honest..

I've always had a soft spot for Torino, would quite like to visit Superga in a completely non morbid way.

Did they ever manage to do anything with their old Filadelfia stadium?

There is quite alot that could be regarded as a quick **** round here, to be fair.

I do concede though, the passion is really still with Saints but like anyone, I do need a football fix and that's my local team, so....

Likewise... last thing I heard about the Filadelfia was the repeated utterings of the local council saying that they would refurbish it over and over again yet nothing ever happened to it...

The two books on Italian football from John Foot and Paddy Agnew give a good insight into these things.

On another note, I remember 'managing' Torino once on FM and resurrecting the Filadelfia. Oh good times :(

I own both, great reads. Currently near the end of the John Foot one.

Futebol : a Brazilian Way of Life by Alex Bellos is also a great footie book

Not dated, but it doesn't look up to date. I would imagine it's probably still a wreck. :-(

Ah, I do like those kind of books. Might be tempted to read Tor and Gol, the german and spanish versions, I'm sure they are an equally interesting read too.

Brazilian football.... an insight, that must be, er, interesting!

Seeing as we've somehow morphed onto football books, I am now tempted list and recommend some from my extensive collection. Many, of which, has probably prolonged my insomina as opposed to have helped cure it...

Oh God, I think whilst we are on the subject I bring up one of the most infamous books on Italian Football.

The Miracle Of Castel Di Sangro.

Truly, utterly, unbelievable from the first page to the last.

The one on Hellas Verona is also brilliant... I think it was done by Tim Ryan, can't remember the name of it though..

The Brazilian book is great, really explores the root of the culture out there and is a collection of fascinating stories from all corners of the country and all it's levels of football, rather than just being a book about Pele, Romario and Ronaldo (although there is a chapter dedicated to the story of Garrincha)

Highly recommended!

Noted, I think I will add it to my next batch of Amazon purchases! Thank you.

That's exactly what I had hoped to hear because, whilst I find the story of Romario et al enlightening, it's always good to dig deeper and find out a little more than the most successful footballing exports of a particular country. Having said that, Garrincha's story I'm sure is an interesting read. Didn't he have a problem with his legs when he was younger? They were bowed by a disease?

I still haven't seen anything on Argentine football yet, other than Maradona's autobiography which was a good read but a little one-sided and loud...

Is it the one where he follows them for a season?

Yeah... he decides to follow them for one whole season to every game. An amazing journey... I still retain a soft spot for Hellas and its been a couple of years since I last read the book.

And I find myself hating 'The Donkeys' (Chievo Verona) with an intense passion, too. Strange, but once you read the book, you kinda understand! Bloody small-time Veronese upstarts...

Yeah, the Maradona one sums up his personality though, I thought it was an entertaining read. The translation was amusing at times too, especially the constant use of the word "vaccinated"

Hi sue.

Not been to Turin yet, I'm also a Romanista, Roma are my 2nd team. Been to about 7 or 8 games at the Olimpico now, would like to do a Roma away game but with all the away fan bans in Italy it's so hard to arrange trips over when i don't even know if Roma fans are to be allowed to the away game untill like a week before the game! The last 2 seasons they've been banned from going to Juve, a game at the San Siro is not out of the question tho!

I can put you in contact with the ex-Pats out there who follow Malaga, they even have an 'English' part of the stadium....I remember one bloke telling me it's something stupid like 4000 season ticket holders are English.

Tommy Mooney was playing at Marbella last season, not sure if he's still there. The owner is English I believe.

Fratton

No no no! Modern equipment, clean walkways, that's way too posh for us. At least two stands at Fratton you can't use the toilets without standing in previous. You've clearly never been Hamster, the cowshed is really worse than you can imagine.
