Griffo Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 Interesting about that he knew we were shaky from set pieces. That's been evident for years.
S-Clarke Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 Good news about Murty as well. Hopefully he puts pen to paper on monday - because he's exactly what we need both on and off the pitch.
SNSUN Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 So Murty's been offered a contract. Either he's a slow writer or he's still mulling it over. I'm assuming it's a pay cut from Reading, but at 34 he should be thankful for what he can get! I think he's be good for us, he's an old pro with bags of experience and could give us a couple of good seasons. I wonder if we can get a spy into the training ground this week to espy the new signings... ;-)
NickG Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 all makes sense, quite reassuring lacked size without Thomas in defence lacked experience and power like to think will have couple of players in for next week and Thomas back. Sounds like Murty is in. Hopefully will appease the drama queens.
Third Division South Days Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 The last sentence re the signing of Murty seems strange. "Not close to a decision but the contract is there and it shouldn't be a problem". He's been here for weeks so why is the decision not close? Personally I interepreted "It's not close to a decision time, there's a contract there and I don't see it being a problem" as meaning 'it's not close to a point where we have to say sign up or we'll go for someone else' not 'Murty is a long way from making a decision.' Bailey Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 Another good, honest review from Pardew. It's reassuring to hear him talking about our defensive frailties from set-pieces, and no doubt he's working hard on the training ground to get this sorted. Fingers crossed he can bring in a player or two during the next week in a bid to improve our defence also! Good news re: Murty's situation as well. Hopefully he is close to signing a contract with us as he could be a very useful player for us in League One. He's got bags of experience and after seeing him a couple of times during pre-season, he looks up for the challenge ahead and well worth signing up. I just hope we don't have another Stern scenario on our hands!

Thats how I read it too. I really hope he signs, like others have said he is exactly what we need. If Murty, a strong CB and an experienced midfielder sign next week, and Rasiak and/or Saga decide to stay, i will be a happy chappy
Chez Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 not seen a great deal of Murty since he has been here but will our defensive frailties at set pieces be solved by signing a 5ft not much full back? I keep saying this but if we continue to pick Perry then we need some height in the side and I mean a 6"4 centre back and a 6"odd striker and maybe something similar in midfield. Either that or we need some Gary Neville, Jason Dodd or Paul Telfer types that win headers from set peices all day long.

Murty has looked good on the two occasions I've seen him and we should snap him up. But I think you're right that we should bring in height (and power) at CB and in other areas of the side. oxfordshire_saint Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 Pardew thinks we're somewhere halfway between the Hearts and the QPR result, 0-0 against Millwall then?

SFC Forever Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 I and several others have said for months that we need both height and strength added to our squad. Perry is a trier but is not going to gain speed or height. Thomas looks as if he could be another Svensson. God forbid. Murty is good but lacks height. Lancashire looks as if scared of his shadow. Harding looks as though he will be a useful acquisition. Wotton looks and acts as if he is a statue about to awaken from a very deep sleep. He likes to think of himself as a midfield general but all his shouting and armwaving doesn't work without something to go with it. We have some talent in midfield but we have no muscle. As for the forward line. Well if Rasiak stays we have a chance. Saga forget he just doesn't appear interested. So what do we need. In a word - muscle. In my book we need 2 CB, 1 or 2 midfielders and at least 1 striker. One of each would tide us over for now. Hopefully once the season has begun we will pick up a couple of loanies. I wonder if he's looking At JPS - he did well for us last season when he came in. Not sure if he's still available, but he knows the squad and knows what his role is, so he would fit in pretty quickly and give the height in the centre of the defense.
