Lots of signings not necessarily a good thing

Lots of people have been whinging about a lack of signings, but take a look at Norwich. Gunn said he made all his signings early to enable them to gel (12 was it?) and they get stuffed 1-7 at home to local rivals Colchester.

Fans hurling their season tickets at him at the end!

No matter how bad you think things are, there is always someone worse off.

1-7 at home is still bloody poor, especially for a team that all of us think are title contenders...

The point is there, nothing in this league, or the one above us, is set in stone and anything can happen in the next 9 months or so...

I think we desperately need a striker whether saga stays or go's

there was nothing to aim at upfront today, we need a target man and probably a pacy striker as well

we also need a abdou style player in midfield too and obviously a right mid and a centre back too as well as possibly a need for more squad players so there's some work to be done

overall impressed with todays performance though

Norwich were just unlucky, they'd just got back in the game when the sixth one went in, clearly offside, maybe too much pressure from all of those season ticket holders - just not their day.

Hopefully Pompey will try and get Gunn in as director of football.

Sounds a close run thing then... lol

we need a CB, CM, RM,and if one of the polish leave, a CF as well IMO

Agree except for a RM. James did well today with Murty behind him and delivered a few good crosses. And if he was to be out then Lee Holmes should be given his injury-free chance.

although as lee holmes is left footed i'd rather have a right footed player who is gonna get to the byline, something james can't do

James not once got past his man or to the byline though....

Agree about Holmes, but on the left

EDIT- Beavis, are you in my mind?!

Just got back in the game? LOL 5-1 at that stage! Seems to me that Colchester are a decent side on their day same as anyone else in this division. Reminded me of the day we went to wolves and won 6-0, everything we hit went in. I shouldn't think the signings had anything to do with it really as they'd been doing well in pre-season though at the same time does seem to stick the v's to those on here who were about to slit their wrists because we couldnt buy a result pre-season. I know which set of fans are going to be happier tonight and we're still 9 points behind them!!!

What a load of crap.

Norwich didnt lose because they signed players, they lost because Colchester where far, far better. Colchester have signed 9 players themselves this summer - 2 of these new players scored 3 between them while another assisted 4 goals!

Wise up dude

Exactly - hence the phrase "not necessarily". It is about the right signings, not the quantity. I am sure AP will make the right signings in time.

...and don't tell me wise up you arrogant little *****.

I like to bite too sometimes.

This thread may as well have been entitled "Yellow shirts not necessarily a good thing"

Even Burley wouldn't try and pin a 7-1 defeat on "gelling". A lot more to it than signing 'too many' players

I think the point is rarther that many signings are not necessarily a good thing: what you want is good signings! We've seen ourselves that quantity is not necessarily the answer. And it can take time to get the quality of players needed to improve your team; and when it does, signing players just to be busy and please the fans is counter-productive.

Yes, although that's kind of stating the obvious. RE: Saints, nobody is saying we need to sign lots of players. We're saying we need good players, but in a lot of possitions.

Calm down. Where did I say that they lost 7-1 because they made lots of signings. I am not stoopid enough to suggest anything of the sort. I am merely saying that lots of signings can get the fans all excited, but when the season kicks off it can count for nothing. It's "not necessarily" a good thing. We have fans bemoaning the lack of signings, but would they want to swap places with a Norwich fan tonight? Of course it will all change in the coming weeks - but it just struck me as rather ironic.

If you count goal difference, we are only 8 behind Norwich now :-)

So some of those 'lots of positions' wouldn't need players?

I dunno, thought it was kinda implied by your OP. :D

Would I want to swap with Norwich? Can't really answer that, but I'd certainly like to be on 0 instead of minus 9 and 7-1 certainly isn't where they're at. If they win their next 5 games, I don't think there will be too many more people throwing their STs at Gunn.

You are a mystery wrapped in a conundrum. What does that mean?

(I'm also smiley-face blind - never did understand them).

Appologies.

I did not understand your post. I'm saying we need good players, but we just happen to need them in a lot of possitions. I'm not saying that we just need to sign lots of players for the sake of having numbers.

Then you have missed the point too. Congratulations.

One point on the board, with plenty of potential for improvement - or all signings done and dusted and spanked 7-1 at home. I know which set of fans are feeling better about the future at this moment in time.

Still, next week it will probably all seem different.

Of course! That explains everything :-)

Anyway, now I have crashed through the 1000 post barrier I can now retire from this place of misery.

For six long years I've been in trouble

No pleasures here on earth I found

For in this world I'm bound to ramble

I have no friends to help me now.
