NickG Posted 11 August, 2009 Share Posted 11 August, 2009 If we can improve on any position significantly then we should but I think there are now only two positions we need to strengthen - CB and CM. GK - we all know RB - Murty, James LB - Harding, Mills, Molyneux CB - Thomas, Perry, Lancashire - at least on more but the real leader type CM - Schneiderlin, Gillet, James, Lallana CM - central experienced focal point LM - Mills, Holmes, Thomson, Gobbern RM - James, Lallana, Thomson, Gobbern CF - Lambert, Rasiak, Paterson, White, Saga
Roger Posted 11 August, 2009 Share Posted 11 August, 2009 No way is lloyd james good enough or quick enough to be first choice. Lallana is better by miles.
NickG Posted 11 August, 2009 Author Share Posted 11 August, 2009 thought he was excellent tonight and no way deserves to be dropped on that performance.
Andy_Porter Posted 11 August, 2009 Share Posted 11 August, 2009 We need a quick traditional left winger who can chip in with a few goals and stay out wide and we need a strong centre back. An attacking midfielder who can get a few goals would be good as well but it will be hard to find a midfielder like that who works well in a 4-4-2 alongside Schneiderlin, if we could get Schneiderlin playing further up the field getting in to the box and scoring a few goals that would be perfect. We've got one in Holmes - but the issue is his fitness, was surprised he didn't feature tonight, even if it was for a couple of mins. The position we're crying out for some quality in is right midfield IMO. James was good tonight, but it would make so much difference to have a pacy right winger who can get to the byline and skin opponents. One of Leicester's main ploys last season was the pace down the right of Lloyd Dyer - that helped them get in behind teams and howard was on the spot most of the time to finish them off. NickG Posted 11 August, 2009 Author Share Posted 11 August, 2009 Made the goal but is too slow and also was awful sat. sorry, totally disagree. Think Lallana is likely to be first choice but think those two performances will make him hard to drop at the moment - but that how it should be, players fighting to keep their place. Quite happy with Lallana, James, Thomson and McLaggon on the right. Not happy with Holmes (lucky to play 10 times this season), Mills (fullback) and Gobern (too raw) on the left. Do agree that we need a winger though, it's the main thing we seem to be lacking at the moment pace and width.
Minsk Posted 11 August, 2009 Share Posted 11 August, 2009 (edited) A similar question/thread to what was being discussed here: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=15742&page=2 But seeing as you are asking: At least one CB - definitely! Two would be good, but I suppose we can loan someone in if anything serious happens to the new guy, Thomas or Perry. A commanding CM midfield general. I like James at RM as he delivers a good cross (proved this tonight) and having played a full season at RB knows how to help out in defence. However, as others have said a good pacey winger would be nice. (Maybe start with the more attack minded guy for most games and James when we have to be more defensive minded? Or, of course, sign a fast LW instead - it seems to me that AP sees Mills as first choice LM, followed by Lallana, then Gobern, with Holmes way down the pecking order at the moment.) If either Saga or Rasiak go we will need replacements for them. (I think they will both probably go and I would like to see replacements with some pace. Ah, stuff it, let's sign a new forward with bags of pace anyway.) Edited 11 August, 2009 by Minsk
hypochondriac Posted 11 August, 2009 Share Posted 11 August, 2009 I really would like to see us sign a pacy winger.
SFKA South Woodford Posted 12 August, 2009 Share Posted 12 August, 2009 In my opinion the squad still needs two centre backs 'one of which is able to attack the ball in the air', a central midfielder with decent passing ability and vision, a pacy winger that can put in a decent cross or come inside and find the back of the net and a striker with pace and an eye for goal. I think with a team like that, we would be in with a great shout at the play offs and maybe an automatic promotion slot.
Arizona Posted 12 August, 2009 Share Posted 12 August, 2009 A winger on either side, preferably both with pace. Two central midfielders. One brick outhouse holding type (Pele basically) and one attacking guy, again preferably with pace. Two centre halves. So, six players I guess. Saints foreva Posted 12 August, 2009 Share Posted 12 August, 2009 Two CB's - Thomas and Perry are decent but they won't last a whole season. A centre midfielder - We have Morgan who is a very good player and seems to be more willing to make tackles. Maybe we could try and get a play maker? A fast right midfielder - James is alright but more of a defending type imo, we need a fast and skillful right mid.

Teddy Nutkins Posted 12 August, 2009 Share Posted 12 August, 2009 After watching last night, i feel that we need a good experienced midfielder who can get on the ball, slow the game down a little, when we have been under pressure for a while( like after half-time).Morgan will become a better player imho if he has somebody alongside him who is confident in posession .Poor old Wotten looks so awkward on the ball and he is always looking to "off load it", as quick as possible, i really hope he is a stop gap. As others have said a pair of wide men who can get to the touch line and cross, will see a lot goals scored by our strikers, we did it a couple of times last night. I think we do still need a central defender to go straight into the side.On a different note well done to Adam Lallana, who i thought was excellent last night. NickG Posted 12 August, 2009 Author Share Posted 12 August, 2009 think both Mills and Holmes (with Lallana to cover) will be v good left wingers that out competitors would love. Surpised a few are seeing this as weak area. If we get the CBs all seem to agree on, and a CM to replace Wooton who wants to keep the ball and create more then I think we will be a very good side. In midfield,I see Schneiderlin - if he remains injury free of course - as our creative player, and a more combative player alongside him would release him more. Not sure another "playmaker" or such with him(such as Racon perhaps),would aid him or the team.Remember Lawries classic "violinists and roadsweeper" comment years ago. As for anywhere else, I'd like another striker option ie Craddock to come in and develop.
