For expats - viewing highlights in the EU

The BBC blocks everything to do with sport.

Its bloody annoying. The EU is supposed to be a single market, any ex-pat in Europe should have the right to pay for a UK TV licence and/or a SKY subscription and be able to watch the BBC and other channel's programmes and sports coverage.

When is this arcane bullsh*t going to be changed ? We're completely missing some of SFCs finer moments from the last 15 years over here.

Get Saints player for £40 and you get extended highlights normally between 6 and 12 minutes, interviews during the week and the occasional full 90 mins game (Torquay game and Under 18's vs Man Utd).

£40 on Saints player is much cheaper than the license fee so stop complaining :)

You'd complain if you had to watch German and Austrian TV too.

See, there's a point. The Irish, Dutch and Belgians can watch the BBC, and the Germans can watch Austrian TV and vice/versa, so why cant the rest of the EU see British TV? Its not just about Saints highlights, its about all British TV.

You dont hear us other expats who live further away complaining.

I will have a look, thanks, but I somehow find that hard to believe, surely my IP address, as seen by the BBC server, is set by my ISP ?

It is indeed. There are proxies that you can go through though if you wish. Although some ISP's don't take kindly to that sort of thing so be careful.

Wow, what a helpful comment that completely misses the point:rolleyes:

Last I read the Phillipine Islands werent pretending to be part of a larger community with a single open market.

I have Sky here and although it is illegal Sky don't seem to mind because they are getting paid. The legality comes from Spain wanting you to buy their own Sky system! Mind you a lot of the local urbanisations have now got a system that anyone living in them can now plug into for free that has a couple of german and french channels and all five main English channels too! Maybe Spain are more Euro friendly?

Probably because if they opened it for all then the strain on the servers would be much larger and would cost a lot more. As we are the ones paying for it then we should be the ones watching it. Simples.

I have paid my tv licence so why can't I watch BBC I-player wherever I want? I've been on a 2-week cruise through the med and they wouldn't let me watch any highlights either.

I had the same thing when I was in California last week. I couldn't watch the X-factor highlights on the ITV website either :D or any football highlights on the skysport website (only interviews etc). It would be good if there was a system where you could input your tv license number into the website, or your sky card number, so you can watch this stuff while you're abroad.

It's all to do with broadcasting rights limitations which are becoming increasingly outdated in the internet age.

Exactly, a German or Austrian wouldn't expect to see German and Austrian TV in England if they moved here!

Shows how little you know then.

I got one of the local sat dish guys to install me a second dish when I lived in Southampton, and had both Sky and the German/Austrian system.

Theirs isnt encypted. The UKs is, all to do with the stupid f**king TV licence system.

No programmes transmitted on any BBC channel and paid for out of the Licence Fee are encrypted... so, if you can point a satellite dish at Astra 28.2 E you should be able to pick up all of the BBC channels transmitted as part of the Sky service for free... You don't even need a Sky viewing card in the digibox.

Surely your not that far from the astra footprint! why don't you buy a dish and get one of your family from the uk to subscribe for you send you the card and box, all you have to do is pay from a uk bank account. its illegal but Sky don't seem to mind as they are getting paid. At work we have a scottish and an Irish box!

Its Astra2D for the BBC and Astra2A/B for Sky at 28.2deg E, but if you go to the SES/Astra website, you will see that Astra2D has such a tight footprint on the UK, you need a 1.5m dish to pick up in France and about 2.4m to guarantee picking up the Beeb here in Austria, which is marginally smaller than Jodrell Bank.

And you still need a UK subscription address for the SKY card and box, which for the first year has to be connected to a UK phone line.

Its nigh-well impossible to do for new subscriptions. I should have brought my old one with me, but decided not to. Big mistake :-(

How far are you from england? We have a 1.2m dish here and it is fine and dandy! Also look in the free ads or something people are selling boxes with cards all the time! Granted you can't subscribe to Sky sports because of the phone line thing but you get all the free channels including bbc. Also if you have any family in the uk they could take out a new subscription and give you their old box and card and you just pay thyem the subscription.

You are right, I just need to go a bit further with my research and my devious thinking. I mean, if I were really desperate I could probably sit and get ****ed in a betting cafe over here when I know Saints are on Sky and get them to switch one channel to English football.

I just find it odd that I can pick up radio1, 2, 3,4, etc. on the internet feed but as soon as sports coverage starts it all goes "tilt"

Bloody iPhone done me again lol

Why do you think iPhone always predicts white with a capital W?! It annoys the hell out of me! Sorry for going off topic. The only thing I can think of is cuz it's American, and it's predicting White House.....

You only need a subscription if you want pay channels like Sky Sports or movies. I get loads of free channels, all BBC, ITV, Channel 4, plus quite a lot more. You just need an old sky box and an old sky card for the channel 4 ones (easy to pick up).

I've never paid for anything other than the 40 quid for the box and I've never needed to connect it to a phone line.

What sort of box ? All the ones I've seen need a card, even for the freebies.

And I'd love to know how you get the BBC in Norway. You are well outside the footprint.

As i said just look on ebay or free ads, loads of boxes with valid cards on there and good for all the free channels! All BBC channels, all ITV channels, all channel 4 channels and Five plus loads more. I believe that site that you went on for the astra footprint is lying if it says you need 1.5 mtre dish for France because I am approx 1000 kms from southern France and mine is 1.2 metres.

Is it really OK 24 hrs a day in all weather conditions ?

You may want to consider Freesat as well. This works well enough in mainland France...though can't say I've tried it in Austria.

Blimey, not even heard about this.

So, me mum can pop into Argos, buy a Freesat receiver, fly it over here and I can watch UK TV if I re/align my dish from Astra1 to Astra2.

That easy ?

Ahh, so it's the size of the dish that's the problem rather than not actually being able to receive the transmissions, granted you would need a fairly hefty diameter dish ... You don't need a Sky card to pick up the FTA channels, just a Sky digibox that you could pick up off ebay.

If you use one of these proxies in your web browser you'll be able to access the content on the BBC website as the servers use GEOIP to ascertain your location and any of these resolve to a UK based IP address

Dont your sat/cable providers in Canada have some sort of overseas rights ?

Yes. We do very well for Prem soccer, with the Setanta package anyway. Five or six live games each weekend.

But the BBC and other online stuff (except for subscribed Saints TV), which I thought was the point of this thread, is inaccessible.

Where I live in the Italian Alps I don't get any TV at all, which given the quality of Berlusconi's craap is no great loss.

Mind you, perhaps I might if I bought a TV!!

It is annoying not being able to see little video clips of footie on the BBC's web-site when everything else is available.

Mind you, with Saints' recent lapse into obscurity it's not as if there's been much to search for around the local sports' bars!

It's straightforward enough.. you can probably get a freesat decoder on ebay for around £40 if you don't want the HD version.

Well I am not going to lie, when it is really bad weather you do get some interference on some channels and lose some altogether, although that tends to be the likes of more4, e4 and maybe itv 3 and 4. The BBC is one of the most stable and as i say it is only in extreme weather, mainly cloud cover I think! When it rains hard here it really rains but I have fashioned a device made of plastic bags and three bits of dowling that I fix over the LNB which stops it getting rained on and usually clears the problem.

Yes you can change the IP address with a proxy. One problem is that it'll be slower than you would get as the "signal" needs to go via the proxy so if you have a fast connection it should be OK.

I've used this to watch some US TV series ahead of time (and without the ads!).

What is strange is that I'm here in the UK atm but cannot view the any video on the beeb as my access is via Switzerland, bizarre!
