ladysaint Posted 22 November, 2009 Share Posted 22 November, 2009 the guy is back from injury but not even getting a place on the bench, does he not figure in Pardews plan.
Nexstar Posted 22 November, 2009 Share Posted 22 November, 2009 I hope he does, far better set-piece taker than James will ever be.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 22 November, 2009 Share Posted 22 November, 2009 Not enough pace? Llanna is doing a nice job on the left too
doggface Posted 22 November, 2009 Share Posted 22 November, 2009 I posted a long while back I had heard he was not in pardew's plans early on, I expect him to move on. Shame I think he is ok
SuperMikey Posted 22 November, 2009 Share Posted 22 November, 2009 I really rate him, think he's very good technically, but lacks the pace to beat his man. Having said that, his set-piece delivery is top notch, and that's definitely something we're missing at the moment.
Weston Saint Posted 22 November, 2009 Share Posted 22 November, 2009 He only made 11 appearances for us last season through injury and only 2 sub appearances this year. Clearly he is not as good as some seem to think on here. He needs to move on and get games somewhere else.

Maybe they can't see him ever being injury free for long.
L1Minus10 Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 Not good enough, not fit enough. Loan him out for half a season to see if he can stay fit.
Arizona Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 No pace, no trickery. Too easy to read IMO. Injury record not to impressive either.
jam Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 I'd assume Mills gets a place on the bench ahead of him as Mills is a more versatile sub.
Minsk Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 I'd assume Mills gets a place on the bench ahead of him as Mills is a more versatile sub. Mills is, indeed, more versatile; he also has more pace, is better at taking set pices, is a better crosser, a better tackler and has a better shot on him. All in all Mills is a far better player than Holmes! (All in my and, it would appear, Pardew's opinion of course.)
the saint in winchester Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 Holmes is getting a regular place in the reserves and doing well. Most of the play goes through the left side - Molly and Holmes. He does have the pace and the trickery, but is an old fashioned winger in the mould of Sydenham and Jenkins. He doesn't come inside very often, is more a touchline hugger. AP comes down sometimes. I can only assume he prefers the more flexible approach for the left (and right) side using Lallana. If Holmes gets in, the play would be more cross and head it, and I assume that AP doesn't want to go down that route?!

I'm not disagreeing as I've seen little of Mills through his career but in the times I have this season he has been frighteningly poor.
saint_stevo Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 Mills has looked poor, runs down dark alleys. WOuld like to see holmes given a chance, and i bet Lambert would as well
Sour Mash Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 (edited) I thought Holmes looked class first couple of months of last season. Injuries have taken their toll since then, but he can beat a man, get to the by-line and cross well and generally pull opposing defences around a bit, he may not be a complete world beater, but I find it hard to believe he's not even worth a run out. Mills is more versatile and a better defender, but I don't think he's a better left-winger. Edited 23 November, 2009 by Sour Mash
Matthew Le God Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 the guy is back from injury but not even getting a place on the bench, does he not figure in Pardews plan. You have answered your own question.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 Holmes has played 107 games since 2002 average of 13 games a season and scoring 7 goals. I'd say that says it all about a career starting as a promising 15 year old at Derby but mostly spent at lower league teams on loan and mostly with long periods of time out injured. His early season form last season seems to have made a huge impression on alot of people on here. IMO i've only seen him play a couple of decent games and don't think he merits a place in the first team at the moment.
Yate Saint Posted 23 November, 2009 Share Posted 23 November, 2009 I would like to see him get a chance. Be nice to see him get a game in the FA Cup. I thought we really missed him last season when he was out injured. But its obvious Pardew is not liking him, similar to Saga. Holmes was linked with Bristol Rovers recently. 70's Mike Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 is Holmes another player whose reputation grows by NOT playing.
chocco boxo Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 I have never rated Holmes but this it seems just goes to show how most managers have favourites and players they clearly do not rate. Sometimes is it more down to pesonality than skill?
