Murty

Murty will possibly be amongst the contenders for man of the match on thesaintsfirm.net. I note on here how some people have quickly picked up on the feel good factor when he plays. Right now I feel he is an essential cog in our team. Davis was missed today but hopefully Tuesday will see Trotters back and then Bart may be better protected. He was very shaky today and against a better side may have had more troubles.

Murty is a great player for us. I'm frankly amazed that he has returned fit enough to play a full 90 minutes after such a long lay off. It has become very apparent that we have tightened up the right flank with his return and he is the consumate professional in his application and spirit. I'm pleased to read that he was vocal with instructing and encouraging those around him. We have several former captains in the team, but in terms of the length of experience and the prowess of the teams that they captained, Murty has to have the best credentials and it shows.

There was one moment in the first half when one of Northampton's pacier players came charging down the flank. Murty first of all positioned himself so as to shepherd him towards the touch line. Then he closed him down. Then he took the ball off him before leaving him in his wake and passing the ball out to start off another Saints attack. It was a masterclass.

He was mainly a RB and very quick too I think I saw him play his First Game for Cardiff City

Agree totally about Murty. Great leader type, but still best to have (younger) Hammond as captain.

Don't think Murty is worried who has the armband - it's second nature to encourage as he does.

Rodrigues played " almost " two seasons, and at RB every time ..except once. Home game v. Hull City Feb.77 he wore the 3 shirt for the one match. Great captain though, even if it was a rather short Saints career because of a bad injury.

Shef.Wed. thought he was " over the hill" at 31 - when they gave him a free.

Did a great job and ..was " the last team captain to receive the FA Cup from the hands of H.M. the Queen " (she gave the task over to lesser / younger Royals the following year).

A good full back (like goalies) can go on a bit, too. I grew up watching Stuart Williams at RB. WBA let him go (cheaply) at age 32 and he did a great job for us and was still playing in his 36th year. When he retired we got David Webb to replace him (which wasn't a bad deal either.)
