John B Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 To have a resonable chance..or about 44-45 more points. That is true but our rivals have to get less points somehow I dont think it is in our own hands to reach the playoffs
iansums Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Some time ago a few people including myself calculated that we needed to average approx. 2.1 pts per game to reach the play-offs. We had a great October when we had W5 D1 L0 to average 2.6 pts, that was when we all started thinking about the play-offs. Since then in 11 games we have W5 D3 L3 averaging 1.6 pts. We have to pick up our league form massively to stand any hope of reaching the play-offs. Personally I don't think we will do it, I just hope we have the consolation of a trip to Wembley. docker-p Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Yes we're improving, and yes this is shaping up to be a very memorable season, but we are not going to make the play-offs. Especially when we're not beating the very sides above us that we need to. Just enjoy the season for the improvements and the cup runs and think about automatic promotion next season. saints_is_the_south Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 15 wins with only 20 games left, leaves hardly any margin for error & very unlikely imo. Being very optimistic, I'd say 15 wins could/should be: Stockport (h), Exeter (a), Wycombe (a), Walsall (h), Huddersfield (h), Tranmere (a), Swindon (h), Hartlepool (h), Oldham (h), Brighton (a), Leyton Orient (h), Yeovil (a), Carlisle (h), Gillingham (a), Southend (h). That leaves Leeds & Charlton at home, Bristol Rovers, MK Dons & Norwich away.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Will take some going - form is poor (in the league) 10 wins from the last 26. Lots of pressure for next season!
Bailey Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 It's a big ask, but it's possible. We've not been in the best league form in the league of late, but remember, we started the season slowly too before going on a rich vein of form. Whilst I agree it's unlikely we'll make the play-offs this season, there is still a chance we'll do it and I wouldn't write us off just yet. Armitage Shanks Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Everyone should get the idea of promotion this season out of their heads. It is never going to happen and was never going to happen. What we have achieved so far this season is a bloody miracle. There are some real idiots on this forum who have serious personality disorders. Have people forgotten where we were only six months ago ? We were within days if not hours of going out of existence. We had no club. Pardew was appointed late in the summer. We had no meaningful pre-season. We started at home to Milwall with minus ten points and a very poor team who had never played together before. The people who are criticising now should go and support another club. The rest of us will enjoy the remainder of this season with some wins and a top half finnish, a place at Wembley in the JPT and a brilliant home cup match against Pompey with the possibility of a quarter final place in the fa cup. I think that what ML, NC and Mr Pardew have achieved in such a short space of time is quite incredible and I am eternally grateful to all three of them. Pardew never had to come to us. He could have got a job in the Championship if he had waited. Show some loyalty and back the team. Next season is for promotion, not this.

I agree - spend millions, retain your best players - then win 1 game in 3 (league). Miracles do come true! Nobody (should) care about the JPT its a joke cup. Take this away and our season has been very poor. If im ML or NC id have expected more from the huge player investment.

Boris Karloff Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Realistically to get anywhere near the play-offs we would need the kind of run where we win 7 or 8 on the trot and to do that we would need someone scorinh in virtually every game and banging in 7 or 8 goals. Who's going to do that. Doesn't look like Lambert or Lallana could at the moment. For me a lot comes down to Bernard finding his feet pretty soon. CB Fry Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Everyone should get the idea of promotion this season out of their heads. It is never going to happen and was never going to happen. What we have achieved so far this season is a bloody miracle. The arrival of ML was a miracle. But what has happened on the pitch is not. It's good, fine, okay, but not a miracle by any means. There are plenty of teams with nowhere near the resources we have who are sitting pretty in the League one play off zone. We're going in the right direction but there has been no miracles, except maybe spending £1.5m on a CCC centre back and all the other transfer deals that the likes of Swindon, Colchester and Millwall could only dream of. NickG Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Fonte is the only surprising transfer that others would dream of. Seaborne was playing for Exeter. Otsemobor was not getting a game for Norwich Lambert was playing for Bristol Hammond was playing for Colchester all from this division Antonio was unwanted by a team right at the bottom of CCC. Think main difference is we have not needed to sell. We are still a million miles away from Man City or Chelsea level of buying up talent -even at this level. Window Cleaner Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 To have a resonable chance..or about 44-45 more points. Nope we need at least 48 more to have any chance. Do you see Swindon or Huddersfield falling apart right now? They're the only teams we can catch and it will take nigh on 80 points to do it. In short we have no chance, players probably know that and the cup games are probably far more important to them just now. AP just keeps banging on about the league being a priority to have an excuse to spend more money.Spending has to stop right now, we don't have a snowflake in hell's chance of making the play-offs so why waste money on it now. JPT and 1 more win in the FA Cup are all that counts now.Plus not getting relegated of course, but that won't happen.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 (edited) team we put out last night cost about £3m - a lot for league one but not a fortune Fonte 1.2 million Davis 1 million Lambert 1 million Thats 3 players and we are already above your 3 million estimate. Thomas was on the bench - he cost another million. The Brentford side cost under 200k. We paid more for just Seaborne! Tell them you spoke to the guy on the CP forum - they will be delighted that he cost 500k less than they thought. Also we just saved 200k on Lambert and Patterson was worthless so Barnard did cost 150k

You obviously know nothing about building a team in football or in business. It takes time to achieve success. Money does not provide an immediate answer. It will however tell in the long term. Get in your car. Point it north and keep going until you fall off a cliff.

Take a look at all leagues (Every country) its no coincidence that the teams that spend the most are occupying the top spots in each league. You may find one or two exceptions - we are one. NickG Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 Man City were taken over early. Glasgow_Saint Posted 27 January, 2010 Share Posted 27 January, 2010 there is definately room for improvement. No kidding - win ratio (league) of 1:3! AP needs to pick a starting 11 and stick with it for a few games - changing 75% of your defence each game is not a formula for success. Playing your best players will also help. Lets face it AP has signed too many players and now he wants to play them all all of the time, whether they are an improvement on what we had or not. His persistence with Lallana is amazing because he wants to play Antonio all the time as well, there's certainly not room for 2 strikers plus Antonio and Lallana in our side. Well he needs to make his mind up - we were warned about his compulsive spending by Charlton. He will be under extreme pressure to deliver next season, so had better make his mind up pronto. I agree he doesnt know what his best side is right now - after 40 odd games thats a bit of a worry.

He does know what his best side is, the one we have plus "one more" player that we don't yet have, after that it will be just one more and then one more;;ad infinitum. We have all we need, we just need to use them correctly as do all the other successful clubs in our division. I'm not knocking AP but we do have too many players and some must be earning far more than others, I suspect those signed under the new regime are on far better deals than those we had before, that will lead to trouble eventually.
