Lord Prescott

Not at all. More a case of hypocricy of the highest level. Don't you think there is nothing better than a union man turned toff?

Get rid of the Lords and replace it with a fully elected, fully proportional, second chamber. Removes all temptation to gerrymander the upper house.

Usual right wing knee jerk stuff here.

TDD, Prescott is a big supporter of the RN and MN as an ex-

And there is no reason why JP shouldn't accept a life Lords seat, given, I think most people would accept, he speaks his mind!

Excellent. Whatever you think about his views, he has always worked hard and has always seemed like a very honest man. What you saw is what you got, and he could relate directly with the working class as well.

lol, what you see isn't what you get with two jags. He's a typical socialist in that he tries to come accross as being the voice of the working man, but when no body is looking he only cares about number 1.

Prescott as a Lord??

**** me. What a fat, useless, vocally-retarded, socialist, **** sucking ****-****.

Prescott in the Lords!!! As if I needed confirmation that our political system is well and truly broken this is it. An unelected second chamber gets stuffed full of useless ****s like Prescott et al. **** me. What a glorious thing democracy is.

Lol. Another Dune-a-like... although I have noted this before.

If you bothered checking Parliamentary records you would see that Prescott was one of the hardest working constituency MPs.

I met him last year on a particular issue and he was really very good natured but also really keen to see a good outcome to the issue.

Genuinely nice bloke.

Away from this disproportionately leftie infested forum I am the voice of the people.:)

I'd suggest you swot up on your history.

The NHS has improved vastly under Labour, and so has education as well as poverty(albeit they didn't quite reach their targets on that). What worries me are the role of academies to the best schools only and free schools which are just ridiculous.

A fair assessment to make perhaps for the last 2 years under Gordon, though he had little choice.

However, if you look at this graph, you'll see that many of the successes were achieved within affordable budget deficit and some even with surplus. You should also note how high the deficit went at the end of the last Tory government.

Money is a stupid thing anyway, that needs reforming, most of it doesn't actually exist and isn't backed up by anything, it's just noughts on a screen. Banks are continuously creating money they don't have.

Eh? Is this a reaction to the Laws situation? If it is, it's bizarre from a normally good poster!

Well, I'm talking about money and the recession in general. Money is not backed up by the gold standard as it was used to. When you get a loan from a bank, where do you think the money comes from? The bank basically just magic's it up and types it into your account on the idea that eventually you'll pay it back, it's just electronic and doesn't exist. Do you think the banks actually have the money which everyone has deposited? That's why a run on a banks causes them to collapse. I believe in the system, I'm just pointing out its flaws, though it is entirely irrelevant.

I'm sure my materialistic life would improve if I maxed out on my credit card, the problem is that at some stage you have to pay it back.

WTF?

When Blair went away and he got photographed playing croquet that summed him up perfectly.

Can't they just "magic up" some more - after all, money doesn't exist according to you.

If it doesn't exist, can I have yours?

Face it, he's a typical two faced Socialist. Like the Socialists Commie brethren they preach equality but practice self indulgence.

See Dune - this is where you get it so very wrong.

Socialists aren't against people being rich / enjoying the trappings of wealth.

They just want EVERYBODY to fulfil their potential and if that leads to wealth then great.

It's not about dragging people down but rather raising people up.

It's not equality that Socialists want but equality of opportunity and that's a very different thing to what you, in your ignorance, perceive to be Socialism.

Do yourself a favour, love. Read some proper books.

If patronising was a sport you'd get a gold medal. If others posted against you like this, you'd be demanding an apology.

I understand your frustration but just because you believe it doesn't mean you are correct.Dune sees what a lot of people see, talking about socialist values using the people to get into position of power and then enjoying the trappings of wealth. No different to the old communist governments with cavalcades of cars taking them about and not having to meet the great unwashed.

Ok, let's put this another way, the money is invented. The banks don't actually have it, they just credit your account. Do you think if everyone went and took all their money out of the banks at the same time, they would actually have it all in cash/assets?

And money is a concept that only works if people believe in it, I do happen to believe in it.

I'm not being patronising at all. I just get so fed up with people misunderstanding what socialism actually means and I try to help them understand. They spout their rhetoric without bothering to read about any of the 'isms' - communism, fascism, you name it - a lot of people only read what's in the papers and don't bother to delve further.

And many people seem to think the last 13 years were ruled by a Socialist government. New Labour isn't socialism.

Socialism is a simple concept. Give everyone a decent education and healthcare and encourage them to reach their potential. If they choose not to - OK - they possibly won't get far in life. If they use the support of health and education to achieve their potential then they may well amass wealth which is to everyone's advantage.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with wealth and its associated trappings. It's just a shame that more people aren't able to aspire to it because they've had a poor start to life.

You could say that John Prescott, for all his faults, demonstrates that someone from a fairly deprived background pulled himself up by his bootstraps (putting himself through University) and has achieved his potential. Some of his actions were those of an idiot (but no different to many other people in a position of some authority) but he shouldn't be judged any differently or more harshly than those others just because he was once 'working class'.

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.”

Winston Churchill.

He also said: 'The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of misery'.

Im a socialist then.

Unfortunatly this is then misused in supporting the wasters who only want to take and not give back anything. That is what frustrates me, so many socialists go on a crusade of believing they are doing good but all they do, not realising they are underpinning people not working and just drawing from society. It also is associated (rightly or wrongly ) with a politics of envy.

I believe the middle ground or majority of people have the values you put in the paprgraph I have highlighted but sadly it spreads into other things that make people ride against it

Yes, I think what you say is absolutely right. We could probably post posts of thousands of words about the fact that we've never had proper socialism in this country and about why 'wasters' have become wasters.

I'll continue to believe in it, even though we'll never ever get socialism in the proper sense of the word. However, it's only because people have banged on about it over the years that we've got perhaps a little more in the way of equality of opportunity and decent health and education services than we've ever had before.

We've still got a long way to go though.

And he also said "The fascists of the future will call themselves anti fascists". Politicians with such foresight are few and far between. You only have to look to the last Labour government who had no regard for Magna Carta to see that the modern day fascists are New Labour.

Shall we start a 'rent-a-quote' thread.

Churchill was referring to Socialism, although of course he adopted bits of it during WW2.

New Labour isn't Socialism. Jeez I even say it in my sleep now, I've said it to you so many times

New Labour is worse than Socialism, it's George Orwell 1984/The Guardian (the novel) all rolled into one. How you can support this dispicable party is beyond me.
