Are Bridges being Mended?

Recommended Posts

Just wish bridges would be built between the club, LM and MLT, that would be the icing on the cake. Leon Crouch also, for what he done to keep us alive.

Its not a one way thing, and as much as I would love it to happen I am not sure it is the clubs main issue.

It would have to be the legends that need to extend the olive branch.

Notice opening shots, of the Walsall game, on Saints Player show LM arriving at SMS signing autographs.

Did you not read the thread the other day? Said to one of our subscribers that he'd paid for his ticket as always and hadn't been invited for Sunday.

Cannot understand this obsession with the past, all ex players are free to come and go as they like providing they pay for their ticket.

This.

NC stated the club policy about our legends being welcome but that they (but more importantly all the other old hangers on) had to pay for their tickets.

More important though was watching the Adkins interview after the game, he made many references to how the club is now united and has a spirit and how that will carry the team forward next season. The Big Man was at the game, he was on the bus with the rest of us.

The sniping from the sidelines had totally vanished until this thread popped up. NC did what he said he would. Don't know him, probably would never want to try and do business with him, BUT he gave me & others what we wanted this season and it's made the snipers look a tad daft. Politics has winners & losers. Sometimes best to be under the radar.

Lawrie - glad you went BUT if you didn't sing our new Dirty Skate song you are forever damned in my eyes 8)

some salient points Phil.

One thing that none of the clubs associate egos can't do though is rewrite history. In the past 24 months we nearly went kaboom, we won a trophy and we have gained a promotion. The record books will record our most successful mamnager's name and our most gifted player and hopefully (more success pending) the name of the chairman who steers the bus back to the higher echelons.

Noone will know or care for what is currently going on behind scenes, it will all be over in a blink of the historical eye.

If I was giving the parties involved advice it would be to stop being bitter and/or resentful of each other.

Has LM made any public comment about saints promotion or is he still bitter about what has gone on in recent years?

Given the huge smile at the end of the game and how pleased he looked, then I reckon he was over the moon at the team achieving promotion and certainly didn't seem at all bitter.

I'm sure in his Echo column he'll be bigging us up (as he has done for most of the season).

I don't imagine the people at the top are in charge of things like what people choose to film on saints player.

Almost certainly not. Mind you, when it comes to taking the opportunity to have a dig, it seems like some believe that the chairman of the club is in control of every last detail.

With Lawrie, this will be as close as it gets to a perfect world, that is more than acceptable to me. Looking at things the other way you could say similar about Cortese and that would not be far adrift.

The policy of no guaranteed free gifts to ex-employees has certainly bent a lot of noses out of shape, but combine that with the removal of all politics and that goes a long way to building the bond throughout the club we now have. Lawrie has employed these two points to the maximum in the past, glad he can make do without.

I don't understand why LM feels he needs to be invited to attend a match.

I guess the point there was that he hadn't been invited to play any part in the ex-Saints set-up on Sunday.

Logical really because none of the players were from his time as manager.More WGS than anything else but at the end of the day Merrington had to step in.

Ah yes, of course. I was missing the salient point.

It’s unfortunate these guys can’t (or don’t want to) get on. It was a shame that no players from LMs era were invited, but equally he needs to realise he isn’t the only previous manager (granted he was our most successful – to date anyway, I have high hopes for Adkins), and any one of them could’ve been asked to manage the Ex-Saints team.

A colleague came in first thing - and stated it was all kicking off again after reading a piece in The Express (I think). It went on about Le Tiss not being invited and how Benali was in dispute of a housing rental...why can't people get to grips with the situation?

Gone are the days where clubs had to look after players once they retired, because now they earn millions when playing. Matt is gainfully employed and has other commitments - if he wants to go why he can pay like the rest of us. Sure he finds it difficult to get tickets - so did the rest of Southampton! Look I grew up watching these guys earn hundreds of thousands of pounds - I don't hear Ron Davies bleating in the press about not being invited! This man earned slightly better money than the average Joe when he played, and is probably as well known as any of our so called legends.

I wish celebrities, politicians and legends would start digging into their own pockets for once - of course you realise who pays indirectly for their attendance - yes us the fans, not the club or Mr Cortese!

I was at the Rose Bowl two seasons ago and Lawrie was telling anyone who would listen that he had to pay and still he's going on about it ! Then you have Matty and Benali still griping in the papers.

I wish fans would stop saying Cortese and the "legends" dont get on as far as I can see the vitriol is only coming from the "legends" side.

It's in the Charles Sale column in the Daily Mail:

"Hard to tell the Saints from the sinners

The 125th anniversary celebrations at Southampton have highlighted the acrimonious relationships that exist between the club and some of their greatest names.

Fans’ favourites Matt Le Tissier and Francis Benali, who have been outspoken critics of executive chairman Nicola Cortese’s regime, were conspicuous by their absence from an all-star team that played the current side, newly promoted from League One.

Meanwhile, no-one from the club attended two sell-out birthday events in Southampton organised by supporters which honoured the snubbed duo along with other Saints hall of famers Mick Channon, Kevin Keegan, Alan Shearer, the late Alan Ball and Lawrie McMenemy, who received a lifetime achievement award.

Le Tissier has complained about the way he is treated over ticket requests, Benali is involved in legal action over alleged unpaid bills due from one of his properties after Cortese was a tenant, while former manager McMenemy has been accused by the club of having a ‘hidden agenda’.

Club accounts for the last financial year have revealed the Swiss chairman was paid £599,793 for six months — a huge salary for running a club in the second tier of the Football League where staff have complained about having to pay for the car park and food at the training ground."

This one's going to run and run isn't it....dear me.

I do like the last paragraph of that piece; I bet Charles Sale is really proud of that one. An executive manager earning a shedload of cash - what a scoop! Next you'll be telling me that bears s*** in the woods too!

This sounds like an attempt to undermine the suucesses of the last few weeks. Its old news that someone has sought to dig up. Whether people like Cortese or not, there seems to be a relentless campaign to keep chipping away at him.

Its the first time I've posted on the issue and it will be the last. Lets move on and enjoy our success.

Dear Lord our Greatest day for ages when we actually achieved something lasting (rather than hanging on for something) and "They" still cannot leave it alone.

NC came in said he'd get us promotion, he got us promotion and STILL Charles Sale trots out this stuff?

Watch the Adkins interview about the spirit and bond NOW between the fans and the team. So why try and break that NOW?

I just don't understand why anybody would expect handouts, freebies, or special favours from an ex-employer - especially as they're now owned by someone else.

I never did, nor I suspect anyone else on this board.

Firstly we dont know if this latest article has anything to do with 'legends' or whether its simply the Daily Hate doing one of its trawling trash shieidt maskerading as journolism... Afterall, I never felt that generally the media 'liked' us anyway with a few exceptions. Since the prem era, I think there have been many who would have seen us relegated early on to make room for the 'big clubs' that have the national pull... They dont mind 'plucky' teams flirting with the big oys for a season or two, given a pat on the back and patronised ...'now feck off back to the lower leagues wher you belong and dont reduce out TV audience share etc'... so it never surprizes me when we see negativity in the press.

So whats Lawries beef? MLT? Benali?... uhm. In an ideal world, I dont think anyobne would begrudge ex servants of the club some freebies and invites and requests to be involved and associated with the club - afterall the history etc, is what fans rightly see as an intrinsic part of the club, its cluture and importantly its surely just teh 'done thing' to look after your own? But with Matt and Lawrie we have a small problem... NC was very clear when he took charge that one of the things he wanted to rid the club of was the divisions caused by the ploitics, the wranglings and splits associated with the previous owners and board members that divided fans. Because both lawrie and Matt had become involved in this through being employed by previous boards or throiugh their support of key characters or rival bids themselves, they entered the game. So naturally they were included in the blanket 'welcome but pay' approach.... I do believe that had both Matt and Lawrie NOT been involved in any of the previous bo llocks we may have seen an exception or too to Corteses' approach - afterall did thsoe invited to the Man U cup game all pay? maybe, I dont know.

BUt as a result, egos have been bruised and we have seen the public fallout - and if being honest, whatever your take on the rights and wrongs of the no freebies policy, the fact reamins that it has been Lawrie and Matt who have become vocal in the media about it. No one can deny that its negative and an unnecssary distraction. No one WANTS to be critical of these guys whose contribution has rightly earned them the legend status, but its impossible to see what is to be gained by their very public critism, apart form an attempt to unsettle the leadership or the owners? I cant halp but have a small worry, (maybe bordering on conspiracy theory nonsense) that its designed to chip away at the enjoyment NC gets form all this - maybe wish he was off and the club for sale? OK maybe overkill, but I simply cant see any other rationale reason why they would want to portray the club in this negative way in the press, especially when all things on teh pitch have been going so well - its like whilst the rest of us are on the bus, they would rather walk in the rain because they dont like the driver...

We know that both Matt and Lawrie are decent blokes, do a huge amount of good work locally and are not some sort of evil monsters. OK so big Egos, but thats never been an issue in football and not a problem for me, its what made them successful... but surely this is now becomming just a tad annoying? I know there are those for whom they can do no wrong 'if LM or Matt are critical of NC, they must be right' - but this is blinkered. I suspect NC has gotetn things wrong, and upset a few folk, and its rioght he should not be beyond criticism if constructive and supportive of growth and progress we as a club want to achieve - but these public criticisms, have no value, are not constructive and just smack of bruised egos and pettiness - which is what makes it so sad.

It makes both Matt and Lawrie (and it should be pointed out that we dont know if this latest media bo llox was their work or not) just look childish... the last thing any fan wants is to see their heros legendary status become erroded by this constant bleating - and I am struggling to see a rational and reasonable explanation as to why these stories continue - LM or Matty could and should end it now. It would be in the clubs as well as their own interests to do so - or tehy end up looking stupid.... unless the conspiracy theorists are right and they do have an Agenda?
