How does no flash internet effect me? eg watching youtube via this site?

Youtube will be fine, it's part of Google so will be utterly ok. The main issue would be something like Saints Player which does need it. The iPhone 5 and all Apple products do not support it either anyway, so it's becoming less of an issue as most widely used websites are moving away from it.

Not to mention that it is ridiculously easy to enable it if you are desperate.

I'm not really up on these things, still using a 10 year old Nokia, but hutch jr. is looking for a new phone for christmas. Would it be fair to say that this Nexus 4 is a direct competitor for the Galaxy S3?

Yep. The Nexus 4 is running a newer operating system. Much cheaper too.

I was tempted by the Nexus 4, amazing value, as is the Nexus 7 (one of the best value purchases I have ever made).

My contract is up and I managed to talk EE into giving me a free Nokia Lumia 920 on my current deal of £26 p/m, they wanted £150 up front! All I did was talk some crap about going to Giff Gaff. Result.

Alongside the big Androids (S3, HTC One series, and Nexus 4) the iPhone 5 doesn't stack up all that well. Part of my job is mobile comms so get to use most of the new handsets coming out as people at work get them and the iPhone is a bit underwhelming. Bit too chunky, not nice in the hand (neither was the iPhone 4, which is why you get so many with cracked screens), screen not big enough and wrong aspect ratio. Starting to lag behind Android a little now. Having said all that, the latest generation iPod Touch is utter porn - if they could make the 5 that thin they'd be on to a winner.

Managed to order a Nexus 4 in the rush this morning, what I like about it is the longevity of a Nexus phone. My current phone is a Nexus S which will be 2 years old next month (about 50 in phone years) and yet it will probably get the Android 4.2 update next week. Same goes for this Nexus 4 - it will be the first to get the next 2 or 3 releases of Android and the hardware is powerful enough to cope.

Given that LTE/4G is so expensive and won't be widely available until next summer the lack of that isn't an issue. Going to be a while before we get sensible prices for LTE - you're paying a premium for not very much unless you're streaming or tethering.

I gave up believing or caring what you had to say after your 'chunky' iPhone comment.

You'll probably find that phones with a 0.7 inch larger screen will be bigger and heavier.

It's funny in many reviews how they mark phones both simultaneous up and down based on size.

+ Massive Screen

- Rather Big

+ Portable Size

- Titchy Screen

But then ergonomics, whilst technically a science can be rather subjective. It's so much about feel and perception. The New iPhone is a case in point, to many it feels solid and build from premium materials and is therefore reassuring, to others it can feel uncompromising and harsh, the 90 degree edges in it's form not appealing.

Well if you calculate the cubic mm per gram of phone you get 628cubic mm for the S3, 602 cubic mm for the Nexus 4, 642 cubic mm for the HTC One X and 496 cubic mm for the iphone so size for weight the iphone is actually the heaviest in relation to the others.

To clarify "chunky" - what I meant was that the sharp edges make it hard/uncomfortable to hold compared to a more sculpted phone like some of the Androids (e.g. S3). It feels thick in the hand compared to a phone with rounded edges. Much preferred the 3GS and earlier iPhone designs. If it wasn't for the fact that the Nexus 4 has a built-in rubber bumper I wouldn't have bought it. Should point out I'm not anti-Apple - all my PCs are Macs and we have a couple of iPods and iPads. I prefer iOS to Android, its just the fact I can't get an iPhone in a chassis I like.

Anyone tell me how this compares to my Galaxy s2? would it be a step forward or back?

Forward mate. Not great memory wise but everything else is an upgrade including the screen. If I hadn't bought the s3 last month then I would Probably get one. As it is I've advised my girlfriend to get it when they are next available.

The 8GB one has about 5.7GB user-accessible memory once you've installed the common apps.

A little bit tight to my mind, unless you're using lots of cloud services for storage. Pretty essential to make use of Google Play's cloud music app to store your music in the cloud with that amount of memory available.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had mine a few days now, pretty impressed.

Pictures don't really do it justice, this is a very well-built phone, has the premium feel of an iPhone. ****es all over Samsung's phones in build quality. Very solid-feeling (easy considering the fact the battery isn't removable and there's no SD card slot)

Battery life seems good, and the little enhancements to Android are on the whole welcome improvements. Sphere camera thing is a gimmick and basically doesn't work. The camera its distinctly average - not great autofocus and poor access to controls. Having direct access from lock screen is a plus though. On the subject of lock screens, the widget thing is a recipe for disaster (you can put widgets on the lock screen for access to read your mail, SMS, etc. without unlocking the phone). Not great if you're being economical with the truth with the missus, or if you leave it on your desk at work etc.

Chrome works well, particularly the sync if you use it on your computer, and the whole phone is mega fast compared to even the S3

Screen is lovely, I find the colours which some say are muted to be natural and accurate, particularly compared to Samsung's retina-burning approach. It tapers over the sides of the phone which I like, adds to the solid premium feel.

Couple of downsides:

Its really slippery. Not in the hand (the rubber band around the rim ensures that) but if you put it down on the arm of the sofa I guarantee it will be heading to the floor. Never known a phone like it. I bounced mine within 2 minutes of opening it (fortunately fell on to carpet)

The power button is placed slightly too far away from the back cover, meaning its a slight stretch for your thumb to reach it when powering it on one-handed.

Overall its a bloody awesome phone for the money, if you can get one at list price go for it. As long as you have a good data contract go for the 8GB version and store your music in Google Play (free)
