This is something I'm hoping to put together for our Aussie Saints fans and others in a similar situation.

I certainly would appreciate the input of our SaintsWeb community.

All that's required are your replies to any of the options below ?

A) Best pubs to drink in before/after Saints games?

B) Best restaurants in Southampton?

C) Best accommodation in and around Southampton?

D) Favourite section of St Mary's stadium and why?

E) Where and when to meet the players outstide St Mary's?

F) Activities and sights in and around Southampton for non-matchdays.

Many thanks in advance,

Trevor

The only two of these that aren't on Trip Advisor are D and E.

If someone is travelling from Australia to Southampton then they're going to look at TA at some point. Nice idea ofc. But you may as well just copy it from a source that is used and shared by thousands rather than a few football fans on an internet forum, especially considering the physiological basket case on here

A) Best pubs to drink in before/after Saints games? - Waterloo (bit of a trek but best pub in town imo), walking distance of the ground - Platform, Admiral Lucius, Rockstone

B) Best restaurants in Southampton? Rockstone again for the Triple Trouble Y'All, Georges for the amazing Steaks, Casa Brazil

C) Best accommodation in and around Southampton? Can't beat the Premier near Six Dials for the game.

D) Favourite section of St Mary's stadium and why? Northam/Itchen North is good when you want to stand and sing, as I take my young lad now I like being on the half way line.

E) Where and when to meet the players outstide St Mary's? I don't

F) Activities and sights in and around Southampton for non-matchdays. Southampton is rubbish apart from the Waterloo and the Rockstone.

Many thanks in advance,

Trevor

I don't want a bunch of Aussie day trippers getting in my way at the bar or when I'm trying to get a meal after. Just tell them to go to a Wetherspoons and KFC or something.

Not sure if serious (it's often hard to tell on here)..

Just in case, the majority of those that make the trip from Australia are either born in Southampton or have relatives who were. Not to mention those who head to the pub every week at 1 or 2am to watch Saints play. Feel free to check out the Aussie Saints community, we're a very welcoming lot. During the season we (the SAS Admin team) regularly get messages asking the above questions and I was hoping to answer those as best as possible with the help of other Saints fans. Thanks to all those who've genuinely responded. I guess I'll see the rest of you at KFC ;)

Hear what you're saying with TA, but the difference here will be that locations for A, B, C and F will be mapped together, including reviews/opinions by Saints fans for Saints fans. The majority of which are not from TSW, not as yet..

As mentioned above, we're regularly asked these questions during the season and can't really give a definitive answer, mainly because we're not over in Southampton all that often and also due to the different demographics of our group. From Southampton born couples taking their Australian born kids to their first Saints games, through to a 30-year-old Australian born Saints fan who ended up grabbing all the headlines. It's an interesting mix..

For a pub it's got to be the Platform Tavern or the new place they've just opened, The Dancing Man (aka The Woolhouse).

The Rockstone is great too. As is the Guide Dog close by.

I like ale though and these places do very good ale.

If they prefer lager then Marshals is the place to go.

Restaurant wise there's plenty down Oxford Street but book ahead. I've always been impressed with Banana Wharf which has a very wide range menu and still all very well cooked. Nice to sit outside by the water on a sunny day too.

You could do a decent pub/food crawl from Portswood, down through Bevois Valley and on to St Mary's.

Pho Vietnam on Portswood Road is superb. Or if burgers are your thing then 7 Bone. Curry is catered for by the always excellent Kerala. Quick pint in the Gordon then a wander on down to Guide Dog. If you haven't eaten then fill your boots with a burger and a few more ales in the Rockstone.

Platform and Woolhouse are both also excellent if you like good beer.

You've already had my feedback on GlobalSaints FB page. Nice to see someone else suggesting Turtle Bay. ;)

General travel advice and "best place to go for pre- and post-match football-type experience" type advice are not the same thing. For instance, Premier Inn is great for Saints fans due to proximity to the Stadium and City, but nothing special hotel wise generally. Best restaurants are going to get feedback from people considering proximity to the ground and around a matchday rather than just "best restaurants". It's added value from a targeted search.
